Try releasing the tension in the pedals by loosening the nut with an allen key (only a little bit at a time mind)

Bought my first bike since I was a kid. Know nothing about Cycling
Second hand bike off a mate came with clip in pedals ready attached
Bought a set of road cycling shoes
Bought a set of cleats off Amazon
I CANNOT clip in with the shoes but can clip the cleats on their own.
It seems the shoes are restricting clipping in somewhat?
Can anyone see what's wrong - is it the cleats, the shoes or the pedals?

I notice that they are Boardman pedals but Shimano cleats. They should be compatible but may not be perfect. Boardman do their own cleats which are a different design.
Just confirming that cleats and pedals are not universal fits.
You need to identify the make of pedals before getting the cleats.
If you live in Cardiff, I may be able to help. I've stopped cycling and have some step-in pedals and cleats I'm not using....
Setting the right angle of the cleats is important. If they are not correctly fitted, it can cause all sorts of knee probs.
I see you have found the cycling uk forum, someone there will have an answer.
