Re: Great Defenders for CCFC
Danny Malloy, captained the side to promotion 59/60. Best in my lifetime.

# 1 for me is Don Murray. Club captain and tough defender.
The older posters here will remember the Shoot and Goal magazines. I remember there was a survey one week of the old second divisions top strikers . All were asked 'most difficult opponents' Great English forwards Frank Worthington and Malcolm McDonald both said Don Murray
"Most difficult opponent" probably translated as "opponent who kicked you the most" :hehe:.
Re: Great Defenders for CCFC
My father always said Danny Malloy. Im sure he mentioned something about him putting Brian Clough on his ass with a punch.
Re: Great Defenders for CCFC
Don Murray and Phil Dwyer. Both hard as nails.
Re: Great Defenders for CCFC
There's a story about that punch in Danny's book. He laid Cloughie out when the ref wasn't looking and Clough's team mates were secretly pleased about it because he wasn't very well liked.

On the subject of Malcolm McDonald, Neil Warnock said in one of the press conferences either side of the Fulham game that his first memory of playing at Craven Cottage was when he was kicked from pillar to post by McDonald when he was marked by him (McDonald started his career as a left back) while playing for Chesterfield I think it was.

I always enjoyed watching Albert Lamour defend for the City. Always gave 100% and was a difficult man to beat.
Re: Great Defenders for CCFC
Best in my lifetime is probably Gabbidon.

Agreed with that - always did a good job with a minimum of fuss, without resorting exclusively to hard man tactics (from what I recall anyway!)

I saw his debut, and in the first couple of seasons he was awful. He became a regular in 74/5 , and we were relegated. He replaced Leighton Phillips in the team, so it was a hard act to follow. After that he was very consistent, playing with Mike England in the promotion team the following season. After we lost 5-0 at Cambridge in 78/9 he never played for us again, neither id Pethard to Attley after that game. He and Freddie Pethard both went to Torquay.

Worst in my lifetime is also Gabbidon - second time around of course. Don Murray was excellent at heading and tackling
but ask him to dribble with the ball or pass it and you were wasting your time.
