Re: Louis Theroux, Church of Scientology , BBC 2 tonight 9pm
No matter how much knowledge humanity collects gullibility is ubiquitous.

Re: Louis Theroux, Church of Scientology , BBC 2 tonight 9pm
great author though,
mission earth is a very good, i picked up the first volume in a small book market in Bryon bay, then read the rest of them fairly quickly to number 6, got to Sydney and couldnt get number 6, of course this was before the internet, had to wait till i got home and ordered them from a book store
Battlefield earth was good aswell, shame they made into a film
Dianetics is interesting and as with most stuff like that very open to personal interpretation, you would never try and turn it into a " holy book " though
the Scientology are whack jobs though, but are they anymore a whack job than people who follow other religions with blind faith ? ? ?

Having got through the first couple of Mission Earth volumes, I stuck with it, buying the next few, almost gave up, but finished the series via the library, hoping it got better and tied up all the threads. It didn't.
Glad I didn't waste too much money.
Some 'interesting' themes from the early books just vanished without trace, and parts of the later books were bordering on sado-porn.
Battlefield Earth was effectively two stories - one about the occupation, which was decent, but ended with the death of Terl; the book then rambled on into the second half, which was a satire on banking, but was shite, as was the film.

about 5 was the point where it started to go a little astray for me, but i didnt know if that was the break in it for me ( as i couldnt get 6 till i got home a few months later ) or was it that you couldnt write that much and keep it on track and a good read ? ? ? i didnt know and as i havent gone back to them, i still couldnt answer that

Most of the major religions consider non-believers to believe something similar and exclude them from arriving in their version of heaven or paradise. Religion is deliberately divisive.

Re: Louis Theroux, Church of Scientology , BBC 2 tonight 9pm
Scientology has nothing whatsoever to do with religion.

This was the problem with the Louis Theroux film - I was still none the wiser about Scientology at the end of the 90 minutes. The guy who was helping him make his "film" after leaving the cult seemed just as unhinged as the ones who were hounding him
Louis didn't really get any further insights into the religion / beliefs

If some religions have a cult like following , which they do ......fanatical Muslims , the Hindus slaughtering Muslims in Burma , then there is clearly a very fine line

The guy who had left Scientology was still gripped by its bullying nature as he showed when he had a go at Louis , who handled himself really well
That bloke was an enforcer in the Scientology church before he left and you can see why

Religion is probably the greatest curse inflicted on mankind.
Probably responsible for billions of deaths over the years.
Mumbo - Jumbo the lot of it.

Well if they kill for their beliefs , yes
They certainly psychologically damage people
