I used to live on the City end of Ryder Street. Some local yuppys called it Pontcanna yet it felt like Canton as it was close to Cowbridge Rd East. However, the postal address was actually Riverside.

But newtown was only ever about 6 or 7 streets in reality. Built specially (new) by the Marquis of Bute to house the families of men building the Queen Alexandra dock. Now mostly gone but the old Vulcan pub was allegedly in Newtown.
Sources inform me that the brickwork etc that was the Vulcan is in its intended position in St Fagans but there is a collection going on to pay for it to be reassembled and it’s been this way ever since it was disassembled and moved a couple of years ago
Have you got any maps prior to 1801 when the population of Cardiff was 1,870?
I found this one from 1610
