Many of the 'upper echelons' were slave owners in 'those days'. 'Those days' is not a defence of slavery, but it is contextual .
Surely neither of these men fought hard to keep hold of slaves , nor uphold slavery per se - unlike some of the Confederate Generals.
Jeez, where do we even start with what was wrong throughout the 1700's well into the following century.
