Paul, Hughes was a part of the Cardiff City youth system, joining them at the age of 7 before being released at aged 15. Hughes then joined the Newport County Academy and made his Newport County senior debut at the age of 16 on 10 December 2008 in the Conference South league.

A lot of the players we release seem to go to Newport and then onto bigger things. As well as Hughes there was Regan Poole, and Rhys Davies who's now at Leicester City and plays for their Under 23s despite being 18 and gets one-on-one coaching sessions from Schmeichel apparently
