I would have it in my top 100 - but nowhere close to ‘the greatest film of all time’.

Interesting piece re. Schindlers List here https://www.thejc.com/lets-talk/thir...-made-llqry599
It would be interesting to have seen a Martin Scorcese version. I think it's a boring cliche and the soundtrack is sickly. I think Jaws is a much better Spielberg film.
Goodfellas. Seven Samurai. Chaplin's City Lights. Just a few that spring to mind that imo are way better.

BTW, I read the book Schindler's Ark and thought it was amazing. Disliked Spielberg's interpretation though.

Spielberg does tend to be a tad sfumato in his films.

Interesting. Would make a great film title. Possibly starring Leonardo de Caprio as da Vinci to make it slightly meta.

He is one of the go-to actors for pleb-fodder populist films, along with Stallone, Arnie, Morgan Freeman, Tom Cruise and the like.
I'm not saying that those actors have never made great films but I don't tend to watch films that they feature in - as I have an aversion to the endless Hollywood clichés, perfect features and cheesy lines that infest such productions.

Yes, and we go full circle back to Schindler's List which ticks all those boxes imo. I'd have preferred that it had been made by a different director and not been a Hollywood production. I quite often imagine films directed by different directors. I mean, try and think of David Cronenberg directing Disney's Frozen. I'd pay good money to watch that!

Not having seen 'Frozen' either, I can't imagine.... but I get your drift, brother blood.

So I guess that's a personal opinion. I don't think anyone doubts it's an extraordinary film, but it's also one of the first novels I read and so no the film was all the more powerful for that.
I also love epics, I love the sweeping cinematography and also emphasis on the little things; the view over Krakow and the candle being lit for example.
I like the historocal accuracy and the choice of black and white. I also think the subject matter counts. It's so powerful in that respect.
It's also not without humour, it flows well, I just think it's extraordinary

You’ve run into the music crowd here, they don’t like anything if it was enjoyed by more than 3 people.

That's exactly the point. If they'd put in a few catchy tunes and some Bob Foss Cabaret-style Kit Kat club numbers I'd have been dancing in the aisles.

I do agree that de Caprio is an outstanding actor and I generally enjoy his choice of film to act in 👍

Films are like music
I can't be doing with sitting through 3 hours of classical or opera
Mind you I did enjoy the good the bad and the ugly and once upon a time in America which were both lengthy films

Bruce Springsteen .....Great artist but 3 hours of that Jesus christ
Rush were great live but again towards the end of two 90 minute sets I was losing the will to live

I agree I think mission impossible and the like are incredibly well made but also incredibly self indulgent and tedious

The black and white, together with the glimpses of the girl in the red coat was a brilliant touch i
The best film ever? That is very subjective but it was a good film. Spielberg often gets an unfair amount of criticism I think. Not that he doesn't know have his faults of course.
Having seen it recently, one of my favourite films is another black and white classic, The Third Man.
So atmospheric and the downbeat ending was a superb touch. That was unlike the usual ending in those days.

Schindler's factory is well worth a visit if you are in Krakow. In fact, there's a huge of history to see in that city.
