BBC 4 tonight new history series on the Vietnam war.
They are showing the first 2 episodes of this new series tonight between
9pm and 11pm.
It's had good reviews so may well be worth a watch if you like your history
programmes.
The reviews suggest it might also have a good soundtrack.
Lets see.

Re: BBC 4 tonight new history series on the Vietnam war.
In war there are no winners or losers ......only destruction
Amazing first line from that north Vietnamese veteran
Sums the whole thing up really ..........one million north Vietnamese killed , quarter of a million from the south
Fecking colonial ponding about from the French and meddling from America
All for nothing

Generals gathered in Their masses
Just like witches at black masses

Re: BBC 4 tonight new history series on the Vietnam war.
Two hours flew by for me.
Can't wait for the rest of the series and really the combatants
are only warming up so far.
The French got a right pasting and the Americans learned nothing
from it.
Great television.

Re: BBC 4 tonight new history series on the Vietnam war.
looked at that. interesting and well made. Point made about using a rifle if you've got a rifle, a sword if you've got a sword or a spade if you have got a spade to fight. Seems just as relevant today as then. A van if you have got a van, etc n so on. Guerilla warfare. Nothing changes much in practice. Ideas differ as to why but method's as of to how prevail.

My uncle Trinh was one of General Giaps protégés . He's got some incredible photos of NVA and VC troops in combat and then and now photography of battle sites, Phong Nha Ke Ban. Hue across the Perfumed river and Khe San, Red Beach, the American base at Cam Rang, Long Tan etc
All fascinating stuff from the American War

Just starting this now. Unbelievable how this started with the Viet Minh wanted to actually be like the free Americans

It's good isn't it . The whole sorry story just seem to be one avoidable course for America. They were played like fidle's is what I took from it. Once they dug so deep they just could not stop digging. I haven't seen it all yet. Only first 2 episodes. Its seems as relevant as ever today despite happening all them years ago. It's nicely narrated and the pace is just right, the cut away interviews provide clear insight. I am enjoying it.

It's scary in the way that the misinterpretations of just a few people can escalate to the deaths of millions of people.
Very scary.!

I couldn't agree more. Hope the same don't happen with Donny Thump and Kim the younger.

I will be visiting Hue in January , plus Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Any particular recommendations (or things to avoid)?

Good war museum in Ho Chi City, humid as hell in January, very modern place , quite surprising, very tech savvy

Re: BBC 4 tonight new history series on the Vietnam war.
anyone following this, excellent series, the execution of the viet song prisoner by the south vietnamese general was a horrible thing to see but was a big factor in turning public opinion

Similar here. £268 return flight to Singapore and a £50 flight then to Thailand. £50 flight at the end to Singapore.

Hanoi is wonderful, full of old Viet charm, wasn't overly impressed with HCMC, but good war museum. Hue is on my list. Hanoi is cheap as chips (that and Hoi An are my fave places)
Things to avoid.........Waiting for an opportunity to cross the road in HCMC, :hehe: you will never see so many mopeds in your life, an experience in itself. Enjoy, I did !!
