Re: Before the Internet etc
Ha ha absolutely , buying a day old Sun just to keep up with our british tradition even whilst on holiday
Lying by the pool reading the current bun , in fact if I remember correctly whilst on holiday in Corfu it’s where I read we signed Ronnie Moore . A day later than everyone at home
Kids don’t know they’re born these days

Sort of on a side note - when me and my Dad used to rock up to City games in his Mk1 Escort, we wouldn't know the scores in the other games until Sports Report on the way home. How things have changed!
Re: Before the Internet etc
It's a world away it's so hard to imagine .
Gosh I remember as school lad grabbing papers on the way to school, just to read the sport.
Loved the late, late version of the Echo .
The football Echo was my life on a Saturday .
Sunday teatime all around the radio listening to what would be nos 1.
I do think though social media , will be eventually be the downfall of us all ,some of the comments people post show a huge lack of respect and moral compass.
Re: Before the Internet etc
Aye, it’s amazing on holidays now, you’re just so up to date with everything. There was something about being a bit isolated, unaware about goings on at home, then coming home and catching up on everything.
Re: Before the Internet etc
I must have spent hours when I was a kid standing outside the paper shop waiting for the Football Echo to arrive. Even years later when I was married and on holiday in Ireland every year (wife is from there), I would be excited when the Pink 'Un came (scope for puns?) having been posted by my father.
Re: Before the Internet etc
Sometimes, perhaps due to some printing press problems, the Football Echo could arrive quite late at my local shop. Regardless, I wouldn't leave without one, Saturdays were never complete without the Football Echo.
Re: Before the Internet etc
Not forgetting Ceefax. Every Saturday at 3pm I'd spend the next couple of hours staring at a black screen waiting for the scores to refresh.
Re: Before the Internet etc
There was something great about reading the pink 'un on the way home from an away game. I recall being annoyed when we played somewhere that didn't read the scores out at half time!!!
Re: Before the Internet etc
Moving on:———
I still got all my sports reference books
FA cup, league, World Cup, Boxing, cricket in fact all winners and losers up until the late 60’s
Me thinks I’ll get um out for a goosie goosie
Re: Before the Internet etc
And that bloody teleprinter. Bristol City 2 Cardiff City: splutter, stop, beep beep beep, 0. Oh Bollox :hehe:

Not forgetting any score above 5 was worthy of having the score written in brackets after the number.
Eg Bristol City 0 Cardiff City 6 (Six)
Could never work out why?
Re: Before the Internet etc
My mum used to post me a weeks worth off back pages from the Echo every week when I was in Uni so I could catch up on all the reports and gossip - it was a week old but the only place you could find a written report on Cardiff as there wasn't the level of coverage in the national papers back then that there is now
Re: Before the Internet etc
I remember the day we got a teletext tv.
I think I spent the next few Saturdays watching games by teletext score updates 😂
Re: Before the Internet etc
Teletext. Blink and you miss the page you wanted!
Exeter 3-3 City was the most exciting thing I’ve watched on Teletext.
Jeff Eckhardt hat trick?
Re: Before the Internet etc
Our little lot on the Bob Bank used to refer to some players as ‘teletext scorers’. Same names would crop up, we’d always hope we’d be in to sign a ‘teletext scorer’🤪
