Same as Reg, a few decent recordings, but a lot of rubbish in the main.
Sorry to disagree.

Saw him live at the Capitol Cinema, on Queen Street, Cardiff in May '76 on the Capt. Fantastic and the Dirtbrown Cowboys tour. He's been going downhill rapidly since then

I will agree that there was some stuff produced by the thin white duke which was not so good but in the main it was the stuff of a genius... such diversity and always had the balls to try something different.
Reg however I always found his stuff very samey. Liked rocket man and candle in the wind, his early stuff but the last 30 years has been crap.
Again, just my opinion of course.
I admire his optimism mind you, 3 years... they've been dropping like flies recently.

If there was ever any credit warranted for “his songs” it should be given to Bernie Taupin.

Re: Elton John has just announced he is retiring from touring
Very surprised to be reading this hate for Elton, very talented guy and a British music Icon.
I am personally a big fan of many of his songs: call it the blues, rocket man, tiny dancer, your song, candle in the wind, all very good recordings
and yes Bernie is under-appreciated for his contributions, but bare in mind he writes the lyrics, Elton writes the music which I am told is the hardest part.

" heart " ( the radio station ) have been plugging it since mid afternoon, they said they thought he would announce he wasnt going to tour again, but a world tour before then, breaking news

Out of interest have you listened to Bowie's last two albums? Whether you like Bowie's music or not I don't think you can deny that he was releasing credible and original material to the end.

Aren't his most famous songs about a dead gorilla and a dead princess?

Okay, not to everybody's taste but I'd hardly call Marilyn Monroe a gorilla

I have to be fair here. I am not a great fan of his music but I attended two gigs he did at the cricket ground in Taunton (several years apart) as it is just 15 minutes walk for me - and he certainly put in a good performance on both occasions. I think we all get hypercritical when seeing musicians, politicians and entertainers from afar but seeing them on the spot and in the flesh can sometimes leave us quite impressed.

Heathen, released in 2002 is a brilliant album. The Next Day and Blackstar are top notch. Even his bad albums have some great tracks on.

My mistake, there should be an "are" between songs and about.

Saw Elton at Earls Court - Louder than Concorde but not quite so pretty - in about
1978.
Still have the programme somewhere. He was at his peak then Saturday Nights
alright for fighting , Rocket Man , Crocodile Rock et al.
Very enjoyable but like most acts he has run out of puff now.
