Is that surprising? Universities are very big businesses, they bring in millions of money from overseas ,and attract top talent here.

I just looked, in 17/18 Cardiff university had a turnover of more than £500 million! Most businesses that size will have many people on more than £100k

The concept that investments and costs may result in a greater benefit could be challenging for some!

This. That is a lot of money for an academic to earn as a salary.

just surprised it was high up the earnings table , Cardiff is only behind the University of Edinburgh (335) and the University of Manchester (331) on the list.

University funding isn’t all taxpayer money either.

Re: Cardiff University has 250 staff Earning more than £100,000 a year.
I don’t see much of an issue with this. The best universities need the best staff.
£100k, whilst a lot to many, isn’t actually that much in this age

Not really, I wouldn't be surprised if senior lecturers at most too unis were paid that much. Especially if they are also doing research that is commercially valuable

There won't be 250 senior lecturers though. Agree a lot of lecturers would earn that much but not as a salary. They will have multiple sources of income. I know we pay consultancy fees to academics but I think it is paid direct to them, not via their university. As above, it is surely doctors and surgeons bumping up that number.

How much would you expect to earn if you had a PhD?

A typical postdoc position starts at around £30k, however most phds don’t get postdoc positions and end up in research assistant roles which pay much less and can easily start in the low-mid £20s.

There is a pretty significant point accidentally made by the OP though. Under the current system it is impossible to assess the value for money of the university system as we don't know how much of the fee burden will need to be picked up by the taxpayer.
I am almost certain that is the point he was trying to make.

Universities are assessed via REF and TEF (whether they're fit for purpose is another argument) and these measures are linked to funding, so in reality value for money can be calculated to some degree. The average joe public may not know how much tax payer money has gone where, but that info will be recorded - how it's spent is a different matter.

I can only compare to the business where I work, our turnover last year was £120million and zero employees earned over £100k. There’s around 12-15 who earn £50k+. Referring to the point about PhD my answer is around £45k-£50k
