I was very underwhelmed by the Feeney signing. He must be another of those players that Warnock has tracked and thinks is capable of better than he has shown in recent years - but so far there is little evidence of that. Apart from the cross for Ward's goal in his first start he has been disappointing. I suppose he was seen as short term cover for Kadeem?
Pilks is a different type of wide/forward player. More ability and versatility but less pace. A few times in recent years in player interviews he has been described as the most skillful in the squad, and two footed too. He seems to have lost his way since his heroics as stand in striker for Slade, but maybe is forcing his way back into serious contention now with this performances for the u23s and in training?
Warnock is now regularly name checking Pilks in a positive way.
Agree, the Feeney singing was quite surprising, Bolton and Blackburn fans didn't have a good word to say about him but I guess he fitted as cover for the 4-3-3 formation we're currently playing.
However Pilkington offers something a little different from the bench and certainly knows where the net is. I would have him as an option before Feeney but I'm sure Warnock sees Tomlin as his first call from the bench for that particular role.
Pilkington wages are high, and ideally the club want him off the books, so they drop him out of first team action to try and get him to accept a lesser wage elsewhere.
Feeney is on a different wage structure, and as such there is a longer term plan for him.
Do we continue to freeze Pilkington out, then hopefully move him on in January or do we now say, that seeing as we are paying him anyway should we use him in the short term. Either way he is not in the long term plans of the club.
Are Pilkington's wages that high? He signed a new contract at the start of last season, so I would have thought the club would have tried to do something to get them to a more realistic level then (I agree he would have been on mega wages for his first contract with the club).
I would still say his wages are on a level where Warnock would rather that figure in his budget, over the actual player himself.
Pilkington clearly has some talent, and there are merits in having him in the match day squad over some players that are in. I seems clear to me that we are seeing some sort of tactics to move the player from the club, over a straight ability question. Warnock has stated before that the wages being paid before his time were crazy.
Pilks over Feeney every time for me but as Q has touched on its clearly a case of Warnock trying to get him off the wagebill.
Neither. They're both rubbish.
The way I have it is Neil prefers positional specialists over over jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none type players, of which Pilks is the latter. It's the same reason why I think he'll always favour Peltier over Jazz. The first requirement of being a winger is pace and Pilks has never had that.
The main reason from our improvement from last season to this is having Hoilett and NML in the same team. So these two need protection from fatique and injury as they are so so vital for the fate of our season. So Neil is right to be using a player like Feeney frequently to provide this rotation as at least he is a square peg for a square hole in the manager's eyes.
Another a small other point - if it's a 50-50 choice between Pilks and Feeney based on what they can provide, I can see why Neil favours Feeney. If Feeney is crocked, it's only a short term loss financially as he is likely to be gone when his contract is up with us in January. If Pilks gets crocked, we're stuck with him from a wages perspective.
I reckon Neil will look to another player all together in January and these two will be gone. In the mean time, both are proving to be motivated to carve out futures for themselves somewhere, if not for us.
Think Kadeem could leap-frog both players when he's back anyway.
