But the court overseeing the ECHR is not an EU institution. There are 47 different European countries in the Council of Europe and unless the UK independently agrees to leave the Council the jurisdiction of the Court will remain unchanged after Brexit.

Brexit is not going to do what many people think it will, and I don't blame the people for that because why should all of us know the intricate legal ins and outs.
But people have been told things that aren't true by the media for many years, and the politicians haven't done enough to make sure they are accurate.

Correct. I remember listening to David Mellor a couple of years ago. He pointed out that the British Govt. had complete and final control of its borders, irrespective of the EU..

Not strictly true. Deportation is a matter for the courts and if individuals such as Abu Hamza for example use the Court system to its full extent it can take many years to get rid of individuals and very often legal attempts fail meaning we are stuck with far too many undesirables.

As a 'free' country, the UK cannot influence the judiciary, true. It does make the laws though, and our spineless, weak, namby pamby politicians are the ones who could implement changes, not the EU..
