I told you what culture I believe has been lost in the first sentence of my initial post - which is the collapse of Christianity. Yes, you could rightly contend that some people still attend places of Christian worship in the UK and therefore that culture hasn't completely vanished. But it's all but disappeared. As I implied, that demise coincided with it becoming far more socially acceptable to have illegitimate children, and today almost half UK babies are born outside marriage. I'd wager the percentage of babies born within wedlock is much higher for those of mothers of the Hindu, Muslim and (especially) Sikh faiths than it is for those females who self-identify as Christians or atheists.
So you genuinely think the country is worse off because fewer people go to church?
And think kids are worse off just because their parents don’t have a piece of paper saying they’re married?

They're valid questions, aren't they? I was a little surprised at Organ's initial post, didn't think people held that bring back church going view anymore.

I’m just asking, this is a discussion board isn’t it?
This board is so sensitive you can’t even question someone’s opinion any more.

I wasn't calling for a return of that religion per se, rather the greater cohesiveness of former times on which it was built. British society had certain norms and practices (culture). The central pillar of that, in my opinion, was/is the family structure which with few exceptions once consisted of married men and women who lived together, and sprog dropping didn't commence until they had walked down an aisle - let's call it the Christian way. Then in the 80s armies of young women caught on that the state was promoting the weakening of what was the traditional family unit through the benefits system. That ultra liberalism gave the message that they could monetise their womb to become wholly reliant on everyone else via a raft of welfare payments that included a free council property thrown in and with it an element of independence, and all for getting knocked-up. A great many chose to reach for the dependency carrot as a way to dodge the 9-5 grind while those who sought a better standard of living, and rose at the crack of dawn, were compelled to pay for their lifestyle choice.
Today there's 2nd and sometimes 3rd generation underclass (chavs) all over, so many of whom appear to have no respect for anyone or anything. I daresay other factors such as dumbing-down, easy accessibility to cheap drugs and internet pornography, celebrity worship, almost a decade of austerity policies, rampant decadence and permissiveness is at play, but I'll maintain the prime reason is fractured families and lousy nurturing due to no, occasional or feckless father figures providing guidance.
Re: Would it happen here?
It's a lovely Peter Hitchens-esque picture you paint, Organ, but it's a little snobby and you've heaped on the generalisations.
Those traditional family values and theistic doctrines were often oppressive and miserable for many, especially women. Also, single parent families often bring up their kids to be well-adjusted, good people and there are plenty of spoilt, selfish layabouts from further up the ladder. I'm sure you know this.
I grew up in a working class environment and can think of one woman who was said to have planned for a pregnancy and council house and everyone ran her down for it. There certainly weren't "armies" of women doing this and I doubt there still are. I know of other women whose partners absconded and they could be more disciplined with their kids than most, not wanting their kids to make the same mistakes.
Also, the list in the final paragraph applies to everyone. Perhaps decades of pitching everyone against each other makes us sneer all the more.
