My wife bought me a new laptop with windows 10 for Christmas and I am just trying to set up everything so could use some advice please...
I have always used firefox, so have installed that but the machine informs me that edge is better, is it?
All other practical advice would be appreciated too...

Edge is good, it is fast, but it is quirky. I do use it, but I'm aware of its quirks ;)
If you like Firefox (and the latest release is a corker) then just use that and set it as default browser.
Microsoft want you, and everybody, to use Edge, and will try to cajole into doing so.
At this time of writing, there seems no good reason to take any notice :xmasthumbup:
I do not use edge purely because my laptop keeps telling me to.

It's all about choice. You can still use Internet Explorer on Windows 10 as well
C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer and double click iexplore.exe (you can right click that .exe file and set a shortcut to your desktop as well)
Personally I use Chrome as my primary browser as it syncs my bookmarks across all my devices.
If you don't like the horrible Win 10 start menu you can create a Win 7 style menu using something called classic shell http://www.classicshell.net/
I use Chrome on the PC. However, in order to use Sky Go, I need to use Internet Explorer as they use Microsoft Silverlight. I don't think it works in any other browser without messing about.
