The downside of City's pressing game......
This was discussed during the TV commentary last night.
The point was made that when three or four City forwards pressed high up the pitch, the defenders were back in their own half which left a big hole in midfield. Once it had been mentioned, it was glaringly obvious what was going on - and Reading just passed their way into the yawning gap.
Without Bryson, City's midfield was often noticeable by its absence and was often over-run. No wonder Warlock doesn't play Tomlin who for all his attributes is not exactly an all-action man.

Yes that happened in the first half and we deserve credit for that because we played some lovely stuff at times. It didn’t happen much in the second half. A pressing game is also very tiring so great credit to your lot for finishing the game so strongly. Warnock has got your players very fit. It’s something that has been overlooked. There will not be many fitter teams in the division than Cardiff right now.

Re: The downside of City's pressing game......
Yes the tactic was exploited, you need two big engines in midfield to get away with it , Ralls did his best, the only others we can use in that role are Gunnerson (will we see much of him this season ) and Bryson , Damour was quiet , perhaps a Manga in front of the defenders ,oops forgot Halford ??

Re: The downside of City's pressing game......
I don’t think we press all the time. As our possession stats suggest we are happy for other teams to have the ball.

League position - 2nd/
League position after next game - 2nd.
I'm happy with that.

Tell me when stats won anything:shrug:

Re: The downside of City's pressing game......
Don't play that way every game do we?? Was surprised to see the amount of possession we had.
Think the pressing was just for Reading as they pass from the back, also why we had 5 at the back.

Re: The downside of City's pressing game......
And replying a out Tomlin..Look at the Ipswich match..helped Bogle look like Suarez.
(This isn't a dig at Bogle either as I like him, more praising how Tomlin helped him along)

Re: The downside of City's pressing game......
Tomlin offers that link between midfield and attack. Look a lot more dangerous when he is playing. Also think we pass the ball better.

You won't get one off him and this is exactly what he wants.
Even reading at 30 mins had double our long balls (close to) but we are a Warnock team so none of what people see on screen matters they have a pre meditated opinion

Re: The downside of City's pressing game......
What the Bristol fan conveniently missed out was what the commentators were saying when this was on the screen. Saying how we don't waste 20 passes to get to the half way line, we weren't too many passes off "a passing team" in reading last night either. They also played more long balls, so let him have his 5 minutes clutching at straws.

That's why I'd advocate playing 4-2-3-1.

Re: The downside of City's pressing game......
To play an effective pressing game the defence has to play a high line so that gap disappears.
Then the goalkeeper has to be very quick off his line (sweeper keeper)

Yeah, that's what the Sky boys said.
But with the likes of Morrison and Manga who have the turning circle of a very large tanker, that would be a risky strategy against speedy strikers.....

Re: The downside of City's pressing game......
I don't think we need to press so high there's not enough pace in the middle and back four

But what else would Bogle do?

Who is top of the long ball league table ?
Seems to me you want to conveniently disregard the fact that Bristol City utilise the long ball more than any other Championship side.

Pique isn't the quickest in the world but Valdes was super quick in seeing danger.
I think the player we missed most last night was Gunnarsson as he would have plugged the gaps that Damour left.
