Tories making statement at 11.15am. General Election
Due to ill health :indifferent:
Or, a general election.
BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith says broadcasters usually know what is about to be announced, but on this occasion they do not.

We've got Whitts to agree to a new contract I reckon.

May has type 2 diabetes so it COULD be ill health , she COULD be talking about backing Trump over North Korea
or she COULD be about to try and trigger a snap election. However she would need two thirds of MP's to agree to
the third one.
The Tories would stuff Labour so badly it could take them 20 years to recover from it.

Election on June 8 it seems.
-
Re: Tories making statement at 11.15am. Rumours May stepping down
It must be fairly easy to make dosh on the currency markets given the pound has just plummeted because of a mysterious statement.
Buy now, sell later.
Is it that simple?.

The most frantic month and a bit of campaigning we will ever see.

Re: Tories making statement at 11.15am. Rumours May stepping down
So when she said she would not call for a General Election she was lying. This will require two thirds of Parliament to approve this given that we are supposed to have a fixed five year Parliament these days. Labour need to block it.
-

June 8th General Election, May has said.

She's taking the Arsenal job. :hehe:

Corbyn has said he wants it.
And it would be beyond embarrassing for them to block an election.
It would look pathetic.

Tories will win with a landslide, but if the Lib Dems can tap into the people who oppose Brexit (many of whom will vote UKIP or not bother to vote) then they could make huge gains.
Theresa May, though, is losing any credibility. She lets the wind of opinion make her decisions for her, and the Tories nearly ripped up a manifesto pledge for not raising VAT just last month!
Other famous Theresa Maybe u-turns
No General Election before 2020
Must Remain in EU.
Sadly, there are no opposition parties.
Brexit will, obviously, be the main issue (but remember, she has said that there will be open borders for 7 years so a few right wingers will hate that) but take a look at the small print.
The Tories are hell bent on removing personal liberties in the guise of protecting our borders. The Tories are wining and dining with sinister leaders worldwide (Turkey, Saudi Arabia, The Philippines) in the hopes of getting crumbs to replace the loaves of bread we were scoffing before.
My vote, at present, is for the Liberal Democrats but, in a safe Labour seat, it's not going to make any difference. It could very well be the nastiest, but most boring, election for a generation.
Plus, the Tories will not win in 2022 especially because Corbyn will be unable to lead the party on June 9th.

I think his MP's would disagree as many would lose their seats. Besides it was the Tories who brought in fixed terms. They have only been in power for two years and are using opportunism to win a large majority. Thats politics and thats the Tory party

Re: Tories making statement at 11.15am. Rumours May stepping down
It's safe to say Jeremy Corbyn will resign as Labour Leader on June 9th.

Brilliant.
I've got to put up with some shitty election on my birthday.
On the plus side, Corbyn will be out on his arse on June 9th meaning we may finally get a decent opposition.
-
Re: Tories making statement at 11.15am. Rumours May stepping down
Surely under the circumstances it was inevitable. Unfortunately I can see nothing other than a Tory landslide. Corbyn simply has no leadership qualities whatsoever. Lib Dems to pick up a few disenfranchised Labour voters. Ukip to take a hiding.

A guy on 5 live is saying that she will get her mandate then over turn the referendum.
Are you on crack?.

I'm not so sure, he's a stubborn sod. I like him, but he seems to be more concerned with the smaller battles.
It's definitely safe to say there'll be 5 years of more snoopers charters and erosion of personal liberties though. 350 plus Tory MPs faced with little opposition will be a nightmare scenario for the sick, elderly, unemployed and, indeed, employed.

The price, though, will be five years of a major Tory government.

This could be the first election where the Opposition don't want a TV debate.

I know you said "guy". My point is, Theresa Maybe is hardly a woman of principle. Such a shame this will be the easiest election in a lifetime and she'll feel vindicated. Weakest PM since Major, largest majority since Maggie.
-

I hope The Colonel's Welsh Independence Party can count on everybody's vote?
-
Re: Tories making statement at 11.15am. Rumours May stepping down
I doubt there's any enthusiasm from voters who are already suffering from election fatigue. Labour will be relieved if they only lose 30 seats.

I didn't explain myself well, I don't disagree with you.
I was just amazed that this ridiculous comment on the radio turned out to be a politician not a member of the public!.

We have elections on May 4th as well. It's actually the most important General election for a long time but it's like a World Cup final between France and Tahiti.
I've got a feeling that people are already bored of the contest and the only thing that could make it interesting is a low turnout.

Oh God! Hopefully he's in a marginal but, knowing Corbyn, he's likely to be shadow-Brexit secretary.

Re: Tories making statement at 11.15am. Rumours May stepping down
The worst scenario here is a hung parliament leading us into brexit

It is actually quite a sensible position for Labour to try and take. They are ****ed either way. Remember Tories winning an election based on them scaring English voters into thinking that the SNP would be in charge of a Labour/SNP coalition? Lying works.

Unlikely that May will either, it isn't her strong suit. Could just be Tiny Tim and whoever happens to be in charge of UKIP by then going at it over the EU
-
Re: Tories making statement at 11.15am. Rumours May stepping down
Potential for a rainbow coalition making Brexit even more difficult.

Re: Tories making statement at 11.15am. Rumours May stepping down
This could be quite big for Plaid, especially with it being called now meaning that Wales has 40 seats, not the 29 Wales would have in 2020, Murdoch's anti-Labour machine will be in full flow and this could benefit Plaid
Unless the Colonel's Welsh Independence Party gets going, that is :hehe:
