Re: Tommy Robinson 'arrested while filming outside grooming trial' in Leeds
I’m amazed by the thinking that Tommy Robinson is some sort of champion of freedom.
He’s got a previous conviction for this where he was clearly warned. He’s then blatantly disregarded this and carried out his stunt.
What if through his actions there had been a mistrial where the defence lawyers say ‘our clients can’t get a fair trial’ imagine the distress to the Victims and witnesses who’ve had to wait anxiously for a court appearance and then the trial would have had to be postponed thereby increasing their distress?
What about the cost of a retrial and costs already occurred? There’s been an incredible amount of work put in by the Police and CPS, which could have all gone to waste.
Robinson is an extremely manipulative reprehensible character with previous for assault and fraud, is he now some role model?
Just so he can get a de more hits and revenue for his website.
If these defendants are found guilty then blast their names all over the media, hit them with the harshest sentences possible and hopefully it will send a message to deter like minded *****.
But spare me the Tommy is right bollocks.

You have to give him credit. He has so much respect for the rule of law in the country he loves so much that he pleaded guilty to the charges without so much as a whimper.

He was stupid beyond belief though and very nearly jeopardised the cases. Allegedly there were 3 trials that involved grooming gangs underway in Leeds at the time - some trials had not concluded and quite a few more trials are yet to come (such is the massive scale of the problem it seems).
The reason there were reporting restrictions in place was because the CPS and everyone else involved wanted these restrictions - so that when the verdicts were delivered - there could be no come back on the validity of the outcome , and apparently this facebook live streaming stunt has been done before and has jeopardised the verdicts.
As long as the reporting of the cases and verdicts are allowed at the end of the trial - then no one really minds.
I probably phrased that wrong in regards to the case specifics no I meant the publicity he will get for being ‘wronged’
I dare say some far right wing media organisation will him employ him after and he’s a hero to his suporters
And yes you’re right free reporting at end of trial I’ve no issue with. I didn’t want to see this clown damage a trial where some people are facing serious allegations

Re: Tommy Robinson 'arrested while filming outside grooming trial' in Leeds
Reporting restrictions on Robinson's arrest and conviction have been lifted due to media pressure, and apparently a German MP wants to offer him political asylum (via Twitter).

“The first is not only is he a politically persecuted person, now he’s become a political prisoner, which is one level higher.”
“The second point is, as we all know, it’s a danger for his life. He’s going to be in prison with 80 per cent Muslims,” he said and added: “We were thinking about it, you know, how could we help?”
Nice to see we are welcome even after Brexit

Reporting of his arrest lifted, restriction of reporting on the case still intact

Reporting on his arrest, guilty plea and imprisonment for breaching bail conditions lifted. Restrictions on the on going trial and linked trials he was crassly trying to disrupt and possibly undermine still on-going. It's not tricky!

No it's not tricky, but the FACT remains, Reporting on the case is not permitted, (as of when i drove home from work, perhaps it's changed in the past 90 mins).

The Contempt of Court Act 1981 protects the integrity of court proceedings in the UK - it ensures defendants receive a fair trial and makes any actions that could prejudice proceedings, (i.e. publishing something that could influence a jury) an offence that carries a jail sentence of up to two years.
The Act applies to 'active' criminal proceedings - from the point of arrest or the issue of a arrest warrant, a court summons or an oral charge, whichever happens first.
Proceedings are no longer active upon an acquittal or sentence, a trial verdict or a charge dismissal.
During active cases, the media cannot publish anything that carries a substantial risk of serious prejudice to proceedings - this applies to broadcast reports and speeches too.
Robinson's broadcast outside court found him in contempt of court.
Offences like his can cause a trial to collapse, as the jury may be deemed unable to deliver a fair verdict - at great cost to the court (and therefore the British taxpayer).
A mistrial means beginning the process all over again.

Technically you're correct with the on-going bit because sentencing hearings are part of the process but what he did didn't influence any of the juries as they had already delivered their verdicts. The three trials revolved around the same gang so large in number they split into three trials.

Sure but he did do that originally and the terms of his suspended sentence were very clear. Hence why he was quick sharp spreading and coughing at her majesties pleasure.

I'm not disputing that. It just appears some in this thread mistakenly believed that the trial part was occurring inside the court while he was outside reporting on his phone and that his actions could have resulted in a mistrial. What angered Robinson was the fact that some of those who had been found guilty had been granted bail before sentencing as it afforded them an opportunity to flee justice.

It is perfectly possible to despise both the degenerate behaviour of the the alleged perpetrators whilst castigating the idiot who could have undermined the process of bringing them to justice in his vain attempts to stay relevant/solvent to the impressionable and the manipulative who would make those impressionable people believe that this was all about some great free speech crusade.

I hadn't seen either the fact that some had already been found guilty or been granted bail. You don't have a link do you?
