Lewisham East Constituency Labour Party (CLP) chairman Ian McKenzie said the group would behead Emily Thornberry instead of taking her as a sex slave.
Critics described the tweets, posted between 2015 and 2016, as "vile".
An investigation into Mr McKenzie's actions has now begun, the Labour Party has confirmed.
A Labour spokesman told the BBC: "The issue is being looked into. Ian has now been suspended pending investigation."
One 2016 tweet read: "Emily Thornberry is too old for ISIS [another name for IS]. They won't make a sex slave of her. They'll behead her and dump her in a mass grave."
A 2015 tweet, which appeared in a thread about Ms Thornberry's comments about the terrorist group, said: "Maybe she'd agree sex slavery to one man only, provided he didn't sell her on or insist on gang rape."

That's the hard left side going after the Labour moderates after they failed to get their candidate picked for Lewisham last week. Surely, if the tweet was so offensive, it wouldn't have taken 2 years for them to complain about and suspend the guy?

Strange you focus on the Labour councillor suspended. What about the 18 Tory councillors recently suspended for racist comments?

Its very poor behavior and language, wherever its coming from ,and whoever is doing it .
We seem to miss the point and bunker down to right v left , in attempt to score points , but the point being made is about privilege , position in life, setting standards , which as a politician or leader of a council or organisation its bloody wrong , if you made this remark in a lot of external industry you would be sacked ,not suspended, and remarks WOULD NOT BECOME buried , you cant tell me that Mrs Thornbury or someone near to her did not read that at the time , or know about it ,of course they did , it was buried to hide the in fighting within the party .
This has nothing to do with scoring pints its about bloody behavior, not just this chap ,but bloody all of them and getting away with t due to privilege and not letting the side down ,same as the expenses row ,privilege abused ,by all of them .
Don't need suspension we needs sackings and by elections on all matters of conduct we pay for them,we decide to de - select them is my view , not party leaders or smug time wasting committees , they are answerable to us , whatever the parties colours they are all as bad as each other .
