I want to give it to my grandson for his school work.

Dont think anyone can get the free upgrade now, all that finished a while ago but i just found this

I got to say been using windows from 3.1 through to 10. I have been using 10 now for a long time, and find it excellent, when I first upgraded to 10. As others have suggested keep Win 7 on it.
Upgrading wasn’t successful in all cases and some computers just can’t make the step up and are left struggling to run 10.
Win 7 for me, it really is a OS that works well
If you've been given the laptop, how old is it? The specs may not be up to win 10 anyway. Not many people give away good laptops...Quote:

I run Win10; Win7 and WinXP - the latter because I have several programs that are completely incompatible with later versions of Windows.
I still have a server running XP, works well enough
