Re the police and filming....I'm afraid they had every right TBG in the location you were at. Though, it would have been interesting if you'd started filming back....I suspect we'd be having a whip-round to bail you out. Nobody said it was fair. As for photography and filming in public places, it's perfectly legal but these days you'll be asked to stop if you have anything remotely looking like a camera with interchangeable lenses. It used to be much easier but the police are heavy-handed and don't know the laws themselves. It's too much hassle these days.
Gone are the days of guerilla filmmaking. You need permits and security for anything remotely professional now.
