And one of the blokes using the food bank says he's going to vote conservative !!
The very government that has for ten years shafted those needing food banks in the first place

After a little research I discovered the very first UK food bank opened in 2000. That was a Trussell Trust one. By 2004 they had two nationwide. Today they operate in excess of 200. I imagine any of us could pick a decade in Blighty's history and there'd be massive demand at food banks because getting stuff for nowt has always been hugely popular. All's different nowadays to pre-2000 is they didn't exist prior.
Prevous to no food banks there was no knowledge or facts to how many required thier use, it could be these numbers were always there.
On a personal note I distinctly remember as a child facing the end of the week with very little to eat ,cold with no heating .
To the two posters above...
Try going 5 to 6 weeks without any money (and I don't mean waiting 5 weeks to get your wages) because you're waiting for a Universal Credit application to be processed and then come back with your opinions about how Foodbank usage has risen.
From what I've read the only new UC claimants who wait five weeks for an initial payment are those who fail to request it is loaned to them which occurs quickly.

UC is a massive cluster**** and has even brought DWP staff to the point where they have spoken to the press about how badly it is managed and how convoluted the system is.
I've been dealing with UC claimants for 2/3 years on a daily basis and I still can't fully grasp how it all works as the rules change all of the time too.
Back to the original point... Poverty is on the rise because of austerity and Tory policies (don't get me started on ESA and PIP decisions).
I don't know how to argue this any further as it's just a fact. I've seen it get worse over the last 5-6 years.
You're entitled to your opinion, but that's all it is in this case. I'm telling you what actually goes on and that you're so wrong about how people's lives are being affected.

I seem to recall people get to collect when they gain a referral from the Jobcentre, maybe from other sources too. I sincerely hope this reply satisfies your exacting standards. If it doesn't then tough titty.
Stated previously why I made the comparison. Winter Fuel Payment and food received for no cost (free grub) are both gifted. That's as concise as I can explain it to you.Quote:

Getting back to food banks, this article published today raised an eyebrow. It claims there's over 2,000 food banks in the UK today.

I'll dumb this right down in the hope you finally catch on. You suggested there was a great need immediately post WW2 to introduce Family Allowance, I said the need was greater need years prior. I did so because I knew there was a Great Depression throughout the 1930s and I was also aware there were far more British military dead in WW1 than WW2. With far more fathers not returning after the first conflict I would suggest the need was more in 1915 than it was in 1946.
