Any doctors or nurses on here , my old dear has severe diarrhoea
Poor old thing has had severe , intermittent attacks of the runs for over a year
Gp says it's just her age and gives her immodium
What he doesn't see is her on the bog for four hours from five o clock in the morning , and me helping her clean up , redress her , only for her to shit herself two hours later , its fecking exhausting the poor old thing
Is there anything they can do about this these days ? Should I push for a referral to a specialist ? In what area ? And dont say the arse
She gets these urinary tract infections which are nasty but this on off shits problem is slowly killing the poor old thing , shes losing loads of weight , I have to force her to drink to stay hydrated , all is quiet for a couple of days then she starts shitting herself again
I dont think its diet as she loves a chinese on a saturday night
I would prefer advice from a female doctor or nurse if possible as it may lead to a date

That cannot be right. As a pharmacist (now retired) I would have immediately referred such a patient to the GP even after just 3 - 4 days of diarrhoea. Imodium is ok for short term treatment (I think 10 days max) but over a long period I would be worried about side effects. The critical thing is dehydration and loss of salts. Has she tried Dioralyte? However this is also just for short term use.
The weight loss is a worry. You really must push the GP into getting her a referral to see a specialist asap.

Forgot to add - does she pass blood? Probably not easy to see anyway. The GP ought to be able to arrange for a test. Not pleasant getting a sample though unfortunately!

She wants to request a check for Calprotectin in her stool. This will show if she has bowel inflammation.

Sorry I can't be of any help Sludge. Its not nice seeing your parents getting old, especially when their health deteriorates.

Can that be found in blood tests ? Shes got some of those arranged but its waiting for the district nurse

Well if they check for Calprotectin and its within normal levels it will be something along the lines of IBS etc, if it's elevated it will be an IBD or other less pleasant bowel issues.

As shes housebound your suggestion is get a doc up here on a house call or call the surgery and ask to be referred to a gastroenterologist? For tests etc ?

I don't think the latter idea will work as it smacks of self-diagnosis which gets up GP's noses! If she is housebound then a house call by the GP is the best bet. You will have to get past the receptionist which may be tricky depending on the surgery mentality of course. If you explain the symptoms as you have described here and more importantly how long this has been going on, then I hope you would get a positive response!

We have had dr mohammed out a few times who is great and has asked for blood tests but this idiot on thursday was just flippant and had the bedside manner of Maggie thatcher , I want this investigated properly , if it is just her age and weak muscles then why can she go a week without any symptoms and then suddenly have explosive rear end problems ? I definitely think it requires further investigation

The GP can test for Calprotectin then she will be referred if necessary.

I haven't personally, but a few others on here have asked for help with their depression and alcohol problems. Nothing wrong with it as far as I'm concerned.
Even if one person can help someone in need that has to be seen as a plus in my book.

When my mother was alive but in her later years, she would either be constipated for days or shit through the eye of a needle (never worked out why we say that, I never have that accuracy).
She was on so much medication for a variety of problems the doctors put it down to that. Tests never showed anything.
