You'r probably looking at a whole host of things. Those two probably qualify as they have large fan bases. Leeds probably qualify due to their history. I do think that Cardiff are a big club and it's for these reasons:
- The only team to take the FA Cup out of England
- A capital city team
- A stadium that hosts international football
- A team that made an FA Cup Final and Carling Cup final from a lower division
- Hated by most of the English football league system and establishment
It doesn't matter what division we're in or what division we belong in.
Millwall can tick 3 of those boxes.
Capital city team
FA Cup Finalists while lower league club
Hated by most of the English football league system and establishment.

Re: Cardiff City a big club?
I really can’t get my head around it. Why can’t you guys see the fantastic potential both for the club and your country!? Of course Cardiff is a big club! It’s a capitol club. The potential is huge! We just missed one by not invest properly when we went up. Now is another chance. But no... Better safe than sorry..
Neil Warwick. What the actual feck! Man marking rotations and doing knee jerks as halftime talks.. After signing Camarasa and Arter, this team had it in them. But no.. Gets me angry your lack of ambition and low self beliefs..

Ironically only about 3 or 4% of the population of Cardiff actually go to games, if you take the population to be half a million and include penarth, Barry etc....there are so many more people who could be potential fans, we haven’t even tapped in yet. Cardiff is growing so quickly, 20,000 new houses being built now. I reckon we could sustain 40,000 in a few years if we were regularly in the top half of the PL....

Not a good example, capital city with what 10 other clubs? Hardly a comparison, and one of the smallest clubs there too.

Nonsense. Chelsea and Man city have been far bigger than us as far back as I can remember, way before they got foreign investment

I think that was what Harry Monk was pointing out, that the criteria the poster Glynazard was using wasn't really a very good one.

I dunno, was just my take on it. I think being the Welsh capital is a point to be made for us being a big club even if the others aren't.
I made the 'hated by everyone else' point because if no-one talked about us then we'd probably be a bit insignificant? The fact that most of the establishment and a whole host of other teams hate us and pretty much talk about us all of the time is a good indicator of our standing. At least, that's what it feels like to me :)

Re: Cardiff City a big club?
What sets us apart from many cities is rugby. We'll never be a Sheffield, Wolves etc because a % of Cardiff and area have no interest in us at all, and in fact enjoy seeing us lose.

To be fair, there are only 2 capital cities playing in the English League.

We averaged more fans than Wolves this season, which isn't bad seeing the season they had compared to ours.

Wolves have a lower capacity don't they? I think they've sold-out in the Home end every week.

Wolves capacity 32,050 and they averaged 31,030. Not sure if they sold out their home allocation for each game, but fair play to them if they did.

Re: Cardiff City a big club?
A big club keeps its fans regardless of league position.
I would say we’re not a big club by any identifier. We could, but never will due to Liverpool and Man Utd

We get bigger crowds than all the rugby clubs put together. Isn’t rugby the 4th most popular sport in the capital. It’s the valley commandos and women mainly that go to six nations isn’t it?

Wolves have always had pretty good support. Even back in the 80’s when they plummeted they could get 8-10k, then 16-18 in the 90’s even in league 1

What were Leeds before Revie , Liverpool before Shankley ,nowhere near Where they are today and that only came with success , this is why I said in a previous post why I was so gutted about being relegated , none of this the championship is a better league with proper football from me , I just wanted us to sustain our position in the league in order for us to grow as a club and become an established premier league side not just a one season wonder again

I think if the valleys are include the catchment area is closer to 1.5 million. So the potential is huge.

They once had the record for a crowd, about 106,000 I believe. But many years ago.

What were Liverpool before Shankly? Well, the season before he took over in 1959, they were the eighth biggest club in the country in terms of attendances despite being in the Second Division. Indeed, during the two previous seasons they had the fifth highest attendances in the country despite being in the Second Division. If you know your football history, you'll know that Liverpool were a big club before Shankly, and a bigger club after Shankly.
As for Leeds, they really were struggling before Revie and had never been a big club until he worked his magic.

I didn’t include the valleys, just places within say 10/12 miles of the stadium. Still a huge amount of people who don’t follow us yet.

Re: Cardiff City a big club?
Mid-size for me.
I get the impression there are many towns/cities that are much more ‘football towns’ than Cardiff, by which I mean they have a high proportion of locals with a sustained interest in their local club. ‘Er indoors is from the North of England and football feels bigger to me there.

Fair enough about Liverpool but they didn’t win anything til he arrived and with their success they soon became a global name , City had good attendances in the 50s too , but my main point being, after being so long in the doldrums the only way we can grow as a club is with success and for us that would be establishing ourselves in the premier league and maybe do well in the cup competitions , we reached both domestic finals whilst being a championship club so that has to be our aim

Most city fans probably come from outside of Cardiff, the potential is massive

I agree with the above, we are basically a Championship club. And we are lucky to be that after what happened in the mid 80s with two successive relegations and ending up in Division 4. It took us 17 years to get back up to the second level.
Clubs like Leicester and Wolves have a far richer history than us, Wolves won the League 3 times in the 10 years after WW2. Championship clubs like Blackburn, Derby, Villa, Leeds, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough have all consistently played at higher level than us and won trophies. Even Fulham have played at the top level for years. Although clubs like Fulham and Watford have never won anything major, or Brighton I don't think. Even Coventry had about 30 years in the top tier.
Doesn't mean we can't change it though does it? A big missed opportunity though this season, and will we be strong enough next season when we have to compete with clubs like Derby, Leeds, Villa, WBA (well three of them), Huddersfield, Fulham, Sheff W , Middlesbrough and others. Even super Bristol City will off on the quest to conquer Europe again next season!!!

We've competed with them for the last 10 years and been consistently better than a few of them

In fact, Liverpool were league champions twice in the 1920's and once in the 1940's.
Between 1896 and when Shankly arrived at Liverpool in 1959, there had been just two seasons in which the club had finished outside the top ten in England and Wales in terms of attendances. They've almost always been a big club.
Your points about Cardiff are valid, though.

I'm not sure why people keep going as far back as the Eighties. What happened then is surely an irrelevance in terms of what is happening now? After all, Bournemouth, Burnley, Wolves and Sheffield United also spent time in Division Four in the Eighties. They'll all be playing Premier League football next season.
