At this point of the evening, I d just like to remind everyone that a good friend of mine has had his life cut short in horrific circumstances and that a very nice lady has
Lost her husband and a young man, a friend of my son, has lost his father.
As well as the people from Swansea and the young girl from Bath.
Have a care.
I'm very sorry to hear that but it hasn't got anything to do with this thread and it might look to some people that you're exploiting those deaths to imbue yourself with some sense of false moral superiority. I have also lost two close friends in the last month and I'm sure everyone here has lost close friends and relatives fairly recently. What point are you trying to put across?Originally Posted by Croesy Blue wrote on Thu, 12 February 2015 21:58

Is that when I've been posting as Vimana or as calonlan? Are you envious that I'm able to write in two completely styles? You ought to try it. You're the only one who's found out that Vimana and I are the same person whereas everyone knows that you and Croesy are Croesy.Originally Posted by crazyhorse wrote on Thu, 12 February 2015 22:19
It's just not fair.Originally Posted by calonlan wrote on Thu, 12 February 2015 22:24
If I'd been writing under my alter-ego Vimana, I would have 'remembered' to include the adjective.Originally Posted by crazyhorse wrote on Thu, 12 February 2015 22:30
If you were sober maybe you could talk some sense.Originally Posted by calonlan wrote on Thu, 12 February 2015 22:33
If you'd like to talk sense would you like to talk about the theological question which engendered this thread. Croesy isn't able to offer any opinion one way or the other but plenty of other posters did. I'm sure you can prove that you're not Croesy by putting forward an argument beyond his ability. If you can do that my £50 is on the way to Ty Hafan.Originally Posted by crazyhorse wrote on Thu, 12 February 2015 22:38
The tragic death of 4 people should not be debated on a message board.Originally Posted by calonlan wrote on Thu, 12 February 2015 22:41
Why not? Beheadings of British people, in Woolwich and abroad, have been debated on here before the blood has run cold. I was not, however, debating their deaths, I was debating the concept of Christians praying for dead people when (apart from the Catholic doctrine of Purgatory) according to Christian scriptures, their eternal fate has already been irrevocably decided. It led to a very good debate from theists and atheists alike and I was disappointed that the thread was locked, which I don't believe would have happened if you hadn't entered the thread contributing absolutely no argument to support your facile propositions.Originally Posted by crazyhorse wrote on Thu, 12 February 2015 22:50
Maybe I can knock this on the head.
Sure, the example calonlan used is maybe a bit soon and a bit close to home. But nonetheless it raises a valid question.
Why does God allow this sort of thing to happen?
He "allows" it, in the sense that he gives us the freedom of choice.
Without choice, our lives would be pretty dull and without meaning.
We get the choice to drive cars, go skiing, fly in planes, basically the freedom to take risks.
When things go bad, believers pray for the departed.
Now don't get me wrong, I get as angry with God as the next man, particularly when it involves children, I'm certainly no model Christian, I have no desire to convert anyone, hell, I don't even agree with everything the Catholic church teaches, I am merely trying to provide an answer to a question.
I'm not about to get into a debate about whether I'm a foolish superstitious simpleton so that's me done with threads about religion. In future I will leave such threads to the atheists to endlessly debate (irony intended).
As you're a catholic, you presumably believe in Purgatory, in which case I can understand the logic of praying for the dead (although I would question a belief that the 4-year-old girl should have to suffer Purgatory). But, for protestants, praying for the dead makes no theological sense. I was angered that 'god' let this happen, then people were praying to him after the event. You talk about choices but that little girl didn't make any choices which meant she deserved to die.Originally Posted by TH63 wrote on Thu, 12 February 2015 23:02
