Does that happen often? - I mean Bakers with less than eight fingers and two thumbs - never met one myself. Still, if it did happen, he would certainly be selling us short.

Women who get annoyed with other women and say "but she's talking about me behind my back!" as if they don't all do the very same thing, constantly.

Men are always trying to understand women but why bother? Women understand women and they hate each other.

B...dy .ell, you must have some strange acquaintances. Is Dionysus among them I wonder? Weren't satyrs involved here? No, sorry, I'm getting my myths mixed up - ever had mixed myths? Satyrs were definitely more horse-like than goat-like. Just look at the pictures.

It simply does not do to mistake the substance itself with the measure of quantity. I bet some people on here think that Sweetex is a pleasant former partner.

Really what about the Bundesliga ?
Fan run clubs , cheap tickets , great quality football. They realised their own mistakes rearranged things and became world champions again.

But that's not about a saying that people get wrong - it's about people using a phrase unjustifiably - that raises moral issues not issues relating to a misunderstanding or faulty memory (i.e. people getting it wrong).

'Sugar' can be countable in a way. We say 'two sugars, please' although implicitly we are referring to (teaspoonfuls of). 'Beer' is also uncountable but we can ask for two beers (meaning glasses of). In academe, 'research' has become countable again -as it was centuries ago, so people talk about 'several researches' being conducted on a subject. I don't like it though.

Philosophers call that a tautology; others call it saying the same thing twice.

That's what I said. You are not counting the sugar itself but merely abbreviating your request.

What - does your objection relate to the number of people who say it, or to what they say (undoubtably) - or both??

One thing that confuses lower level students is that 'money' is (generally) uncountable. You can count money but you don't usually count 'money'. When they become more advanced they have to be untaught this rule and introduced to 'monies received' etc. but that's too much of a headful for them early on and is not used in day-to-day English.
