OT/ Need to buy a Sat Nav

Hello o font of knowledge. I need to buy a sat nav and have no idea which ones are any good. For years I just relied on my wife or **** nav as I prefer to call her but the time has come. So I have a budget of around £160 or so, any advice greatly received.

    Thanks in advance

Use the one on your iPhone if you have one - it's excellent!

I use a TomTom all over Europe. Fantastic. Buy one with free map updates if you use in Europe; if for UK use only don't bother with updates as the roads rarely change that much as all our money is spent on European roads which are changing all the time.

My iPhone has a shite reception at the best of times so I think I'll go for an actual sat nav. I need something reliable. Tom Tom and garmin seem to be the popular choices. Anything special I need to look out for or are bog standard ones ok?

I bought a TomTom about 7 years ago and it is still going strong and couldn't be easier to use.

I've just today bought some bongos for £12.99 from Lidl, if this helps.

Had a cheap Garmin for 2 years and it works fine ( has free updates too ).

Go for the biggest screen you can get if you are getting older and you wear glasses to drive.

I got my TomTom a couple of years ago for about £100. It has UK and European maps and free updates. For more money you can get live traffic updates, but I have managed without them.

Get TomTom on your iPhone, cost about £40 with all the updates. When you change your phone you just put TomTom on your new iPhone, all for the one price.

Doesn't anyone know how to read a map these days?

Yes, they are great when out walking, but not as good as a TomTom when driving.

It's also handy if you can access free data that may help you on your travels e.g. the location of all 92 league clubs.

i know you said no phone solution but as others have suggested some I will as well

I use waze, it's free and always very good for me. There are live updates on traffic from other road users which is very useful. I've avoided queues and hazards very successfully with this.

Re: OT/ Need to buy a Sat Nav

I like to use Google Maps. It does all I want, and it seems to update the maps almost weekly. Its free, free of adverts, and you can cache the maps if you want, so you don't have to rely on a cellular signal during your journey.

I've got TomTom but hardly ever use it now.

Re: OT/ Need to buy a Sat Nav

I just use google maps and print off my journey. Easy as pie, no annoying person telling you where to go (unless the mrs is coming along for the ride) no flat battery when I arrive and no extra gadgets needed.
