Thread: kids maths question

    kids maths question

My son just did his national numeracy test for maths,he got one question wrong,
    10% of £80 = 20% of £ ?

He answered £40 but the correct answer is £1.60
Can anyone explain why in the format this question was written?

    Re: kids maths question

God knows. The amount of homework my son comes home with with questions spelled incorrectly and questions not explained properly is staggering.

    Re: kids maths question

Is that really the question? If it's how you wrote it then he should be right.

Looks like they cocked up the question. 10% of £8 is 50% of £1.60, but that assumes 2 typos.

or you could use x's where the question marks are, the way it is written in the OP does look confusing.

did you see the question or did he tell you about it because that doesn't make any sense imo...

I see. Yeah, I guess that is what they could have been getting at but they way you wrote it out actually makes sense - the OP's version does not.

Fot the answer to be £1.60 the question should be set out
I worked the question out at 40 on the initial view of the OP.

I think from the replies he answer correct for the way the question was written as a one liner,if the question was in two parts the answer could be £1.60.

    20% of 10% of 80 = 1.60. That is, 2% of 80.

The actual question is rubbish. The answer as the question is written is clearly 40 GBP.

If so, by what stroke of surrealism did they happen to do so?

    Re: kids maths question

    10% of £80 = 20% of £ is an equation.

    .1*80 = .2*x

    .1*80/.2 = x
    8/.2 = x
    40 = x

Your boy did good . Teacher is wrong.
