I've thought for a long time, that Chuka Umunna would be PM one day, regardless of this result.

That's easy for you to say.

The sad thing is, if Milliband wasn't so much like a Wallace & Gromit character, Labour wouldn't have been far off great success. He is hopeless.

Alan Johnson would be a hugely popular choice, but it will probably be Chukka or Yvette Cooper.

I'm hoping Ed has a longer run at it and can change the labour party for the better.

    If only.

I like Johnson but surely he's too old?

Well it won't be Douglas Alexander. He's just lost to a twenty year old student on a swing of 27%.

    Re: Next labour leader?

It'll be between Dan Jarvis (bland but could be popular with public due to his background, the Progress candidate), Chukka (has substance, wants to move past the old/new schism), Cooper (a bit low key for some, was the Blarite hope but tainted by her love of Balls :) ) and Andy Burnham (his working class boy done good will appeal to many in the party, though he may carriage baggage if past government as Miliband has). None of them would inspire someone to the left of the current party to come back into the fray but I think the party won't be looking to appeal to us but will (somehow) go even further to the centre ground and buy deeper into the Tory austerity narrative.

Stunning result. Amazing to see ordinary kid win a seat against a big old establishment politico.

    Re: Next labour leader?

This takes my mind back to that day in 2005 and the look on the those Union barons faces when their block votes overrode the will of the Labour members and Labour MPs to foist the younger brother on the Party. Their smirks showed what they thought of the will of the ordinary Party and this it's where it's got us.
