The parents of the 8 year old are opposed to the death penalty for him, although their reasons seem to be more about living with decades-long appeals than any objections on principle or moral grounds.
His 7 year old sister lost a leg.

Apparently it's more expensive to murder them than keep them locked up for x years.
Really that surprises me. Is this down to the cost of appeals etc?

Yes you are right I suppose but at times when things like this happen I do think that the money is best spent elsewhere. For example Ian Huntley will never be released so if he was executed the money saved on years of his keep could be spent in the public sector or even given to charities of the victims families choice.

There's got to be something wrong if Fox news are ecstatic over it.

Not that I'm happy with it coming down to finances.
The most surprising countries that have retained the death penalty are places like Japan, India, Jamaica but I'm fairly sure neither they (or anyone else who has retained it) do so so they can spend the money on charity or the public sector. If I had to guess I'd say the money "saved" is probably spent on the process of killing more criminals.
