I'd have been 17 in '63 so that sounds about right. Gand of us used to go from Llanrumney / Rumney; great times.Originally Posted by Vinny Riley wrote on Thu, 09 July 2015 22:43

Anyone know what the capacity was for a gig? I always thought it was 1500, but looking back that seems too high.
Saturday morning Top Rank, Mowtown, stay press pants, fish n finger pies, woollies café, those were the days.
Loved the Rank, massive part of my growing up but Woolies cafe eh, upstairs, pie with a splash of gravy and a frothy coffee, living the dream.Originally Posted by Shergar wrote on Fri, 10 July 2015 06:10

My first dance there with a chick was 'My Boy Lollipop' by Millie. Happy days.Originally Posted by Shergar wrote on Fri, 10 July 2015 06:10
This is my earliest memory of the TOP RANK.
I never got in as I was only 12 at the time, but my brother went and said it was brilliant.

1963 sounds about right. I was a regular. The Top Rank was built on the site of the demolished former Gaumont Cinema with C&A above I think. Grab a granny night was on Thursday with younger participants on a Tuesday or was it the other way around?. Saturday morning was for the kids. Even saw Led Zepelin, Hawkwind, Slade and countess others perform there. It was also a great place to showcase local bands (then called groups) including Dave Edmunds, Shakin Stevens and the Sunsets (ugh) and Amen Corner who all went on to have international success. Great memories. The place was always heaving with queues along Queen St to get in. There was also a Top Rank dance venue in the basement of the Capitol Cinema. I doubt whether many will remember that.

Me and a couple of mates had a 'job' there. We used to put the good chairs away and bring out the old ones for the kids discos and gigs, then reverse the operation at the end.
Got free entry, food and drinks, happy days!
The 'Two Tone' tour was by far the biggest ever crowd in there, more came in the back way than the front that night!
2 tone tour was unforgettable
saw the Police, Pretenders, UB40 a rather plump Belinda Carlisle and many more at the Top Rank a brilliant venue
