You have a £500 condenser mic as your backup but would use a sm58 for vocals?

Only paid £300 for Z5600a MKII on eBay. I often buy 2nd hand gear if the price is good and use it to trade.

Me too, it's the most popular microphone in the world.

Genuine question Gluey. How often do you use Google and pass off the opinions as your own?

Yes - I've got one for stage vocals - but I want a condenser for recording.
That seems a good choice. Spending more money in the SE line will buy you valves, more microphone patterns and filters, but pointless if you don't need them.

The SE £179 one looks good. I may go for that - see how cheap I can get it.
The reviews for the SE2200A Mk2 are brilliant - I've just ordered it...

You may be able to squeeze in a reflexion filter with the money left over.

The link above has the SE Space for £140 delivered. They were £299 not so long ago when they first came out. I wouldn't bother with the cheaper ones myself due to the materials and design.

No I appreciate it isn't a condenser but if on a tight budget it is a pretty standard mic for such recording..I agree sm58 for vocals ...i have a few of these and they have never let me down. Also tough as hell so can be used live as well.

An SM58 should be the first 'proper' microphone anyone buys for home recording as it is so versatile, so I agree with you there. But not as a recommendation in this case, just my opinion etc etc

My guess is that if someone has heard of the term 'condenser' and is willing to pay three times the price of an SM58 then they can do a lot better for their money (and quite probably own one already).
Both the sm57 and sm58 appear on professional recordings, even for vocals. But a condenser does capture the voice more realistically if that is the sound what you are looking for.

They do, but professionals also have very good pre-amps which the SM58 needs for vocals.

When I first used my Stag condenser I was recording and could hear my wife turning the pages of a book in the next room - maybe that's why they use reflexion filters...

They also use professional cables and have professional acoustic treatment in the studio, as well as recording high-caliber professional singers performing compositions written by professional song writers

If we work together, and prioritise our heartfelt role in life, we could make this the first Condenser Mic thread to go to two pages - that's like an Olympic record man...

Different kettle of fish, but if anyone is looking for an SM58 performance from a microphone try one of these : http://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_xm8500.htm

I bought one to carry as a spare and was so impressed I ditched my SM58 for it. At that price it's an absolute steal.
