Sometimes your best player is not your best captain, because as captain your form can drop and then you are neither the best player or the best captain.

Dont know about FEC, he is a bit of a joker around the squad and that's a vital role in a team, its hard to go from that to a position of authority.
He's vice captain now, natural successor

Cook will be captain for the foreseeable future and then take it from there.

Happy to just enjoy his batting at the moment.

Great test match this. Not a good day for England so far though - Root out virtually straight away and they had to rely on Bairstow to get a ten run lead which Sud Efrika have already knocked off without losing a wicket.

    This is a terrific match.
Parity in the first innings, a pitch with a little bit for both the batting and bowling sides and a big crowd building.
Under pressure to go out with the dogs but may have to wait till tea!

Thank God this isn't anything like the Pakistan series...

Shame that Root couldn't crack on from overnight

This is what test match cricket is all about.
What's going to be a gettable total for England? I think we can only guess and my guess is anything over 180 is going to be dodgy.

Watching that re-run of Atherton's knock in 95 gave me goose bumps.
I remember that test match like it was yesterday. I came out of hospital the day before the test match started and my wife had arranged to have the Sky tv set up in the bedroom for me. I spent the whole 5 days led in bed watching it.
Poor old Jack Russell, no one ever seems to remember the part he played.

Tremendous bowling from Broad. Surly there's only one winner of this test match now.

    Typical.
Watch till lunch and take dogs out and pop into pub for leisurely lunch.
    Come back and it's carnage.

It was a cracking days cricket but I'm a little disappointed with the early finish because I had my weekend planned of doing nothing more than watching the game. Now I got nowt to do tomorrow.
