    socialism

    DISCLAIMER:

this is a political post, if you are of a sensitive disposition or if you cannot abide others holding different opinions to you, then don't read any further.

people will do anything to escape the tyranny of socialism and communism. this is one such brave attempt where 4 young Germans had to risk their lives totally unnecessarily just to live in freedom. Clearly their stories aren't unique - young and old have always tried to escape the clutches of socialist and communist regimes since the USSR came into being in the early 20th century.

*the mccarthy communist witch-hunts in the USA in the 1950s were a disgrace to any modern democratic society. Whilst such ideologies are abhorrent, people should be free to belieev in such ideologies if they so choose as long as they don't impact anyone else

you will therefore have to explain how your two examples come close to showing the West was as oppressive as the East. I'm all ears

Once again conveniently forgetting the difference between libertarian and oppression is not a left right axis thing. The oppressive characteristics you highlight apply equally to right wing dictatorships. In fact, whilst it is possible to have libertarian socialism, libertarian fascism is unheard of. In fact, oppression and the far right go hand in hand.

I've not forgotten anything but thanks all the same. I'm well aware that far right and far left are two sides of the same coin - they both wish to suppress political free will through the use of force. There is little difference between fascism, nazsim, socialism or communism. All are abhorrent ideologies and seek to deny freedoms and liberties

I suggested that you read up on the two subjects because they have been instrumental in shaping western public opinion in favour of capitalism for the past century.

Have you not got any fresh ideas to troll about? Subjects that you have not already done to death a dozen times?

What would you say the differences are between capitalism today and from 19th century.

One interaction and you have already twisted my words to make out I have said something I have not. You are also trying to rewrite the accepted definitions of the political spectrum.

I've not twisted anything. What I have done is provide my own opinion. You say libertarian or fascism cannot be considered in a left/right axis and I agree, it is more up and down to capitalist/communist left and right. However, that has nothing to do with me stating that hard left and far right are similar ideologies - it is the horseshoe theory.
why is this trolling? Am I not free to post what I like or do you wish to exercise control over who and what can be posted?

I do not wish to control what anyone posts. I just miss the old days when new and interesting debates used to be had. Feel free to go over the same tedious ground as much as you like.

The debates have never been new or interesting. They are always a rehash of the left v right debate.

It's contemporaneous rather than current. It's best to get a feel from those who lived there at the time rather than scholars looking back with a hint of political bias

East Germany and the SDP were very much socialist and not communist like the anarcho syndicalist soviets of the USSR

Yet socialism plays a stronger role in countries like Sweden and Norway (yes I know these aren't socialist countries as sometimes wrongly portrayed), countries that are far stronger than the UK.

The nordic countries do it well as does Switzerland and the old West Germany.

Yet you're a fan of the Tories? They're about as far removed from your ideals as you can get.
