Funnily enough, I was going to call him a bit of a toff until I read his comments in the link.
I suppose there are a few people who could be called "the fifth Beatle", but it seems to me that it's most justified in the case of George Martin.

In 1998, Martin and Larry Adler produced an album, The Glory of Gershwin. He brought in several 'name' artists like Sting, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Robert Palmer, Cher and Kate Bush (her version of The Man I Love is brill) to sing Gershwin numbers.
There was a film shot which showed many of the sessions and provided a glimpse of Martin working, which I still have on video. He was kindly, knowledgeable, supportive and musicianly. A sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr3AEVgzeQw
