Thread: Pedantry Corner

    Pedantry Corner

Tottenham v Dortmund. Commentator quote, "They've got it all to do in White Hart Lane". Should it not be "at" instead of 'in". This sort of stuff really annoys me - especially if I'm wrong.

They got truly done in White Hart Lane.

PS, are you seeking to attract Feedback's return with 'appealing' thread titles?

    Both are correct, IMO

Not sure Bobh. Its all down to capital letters IMHO. I could be shagging in White Hart lane i.e the lane next to the White Hart pub for example. If I was at White Hart Lane and I copped on then I would be shagging AT White Hart Lane. I couldn't do both though. Physically impossible.

A fair point Mr Dude. An ingrowing toenail could both grow in White Hart lane (next to the pub) and at White Hart Lane. However I think BobH could be wrong using my shagging analogy - or not as the case may be.

No, no, you're absolutely correct. This phrase really grates my cheese and I'm at a loss to explain why.

The same as when people say 'Played in Wembley', arrgghhh

Just sounds wonky, and wrong to me.

Yeah but I remember you saying you hated it when people said "it went on fire", but that's a delightful turn of phrase, surely.

And yet they played within the confines of the stands of Wembley Stadium.

    Thus, in Wembley.

I can't remember that specifically, but it might be right as I also dislike that phrase

I know what you mean, and I believe the area is called Wembley. But even so, any reference to playing in Wembley sounds wrong.

Just heard them repeat this most glaring of glaring gaffs. Strange as it may be, it seems the powers-that-be at the Beeb don't read this forum.
