Ian Lavery, shadow minister for trade unions, was the general secretary of the Northumberland area of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) before entering parliament.
During his tenure it received donations from miners who had been compensated for industrial injuries.
These included more than £1m from payouts for vibration white finger and more than £600,000 from compensation for chronic bronchitis and emphysema, according to its annual returns lodged with the certification officer who regulates unions.
This weekend Lavery, 53, said he did not “recognise” the £1.6m figure in the returns, which show it was donated between 1996 and 2010.

George Osbourne tells the BBC that he wouldn't benefit from cutting the top rate of tax in 2012 because his salary was below the threshold but has benefited (because of rent and shares on top of that salary) to the tune of £200,000. Surely that shows he's been "clever" with his wording, has misunderstood tax and income or lied - none of which are very attractive qualities.

He would have made his point if he had withdrawn the remark,everyone know such apologies are worthless.
I believe the preferred phrase is "economical with the truth".
Speaking of clever wording, Cameron's Dad was involved in three offshore funds and Cameron has only disclosed benefiting from one of those (after four statements) and declared himself to be now "squeaky clean" on the matter but has not mentioned either way any of the others.
It's not so much that all politicians should disclose their full tax returns*, especially when so much of it is tax planning rather than tax evasion, but that the NHS and other crucial elements of the state are so underfunded, the young, the disabled, women have been hit so hard because of austerity while there is a trend building for those with the most money to aggressively avoid tax while supporting and being supported by the current government. This after such strong words by Cameron (now appears like a hypocrite) and Osbourne who apparently wanted us all in this together.
*although in the context of the snoopers charter.....So many in support of that motion do so because they "have nothing to hide" so why can't we see all for those who seemingly have quite a lot to hide?

It was an Ill judged remark and he shouldn't have said it, it was unfair on the so called bunch.
As regards Corbyn himself, this is the man who invited Sinn Fein representatives to the Commons just two weeks after the Brighton bombings.
As the Americans say I'll take the fifth as to how Ill judged it was in that case!!

Ken Livingstone has gone on Russia Today to call for Cameron to be jailed over his taxes. That is the same Ken Livingstone who sheltered his earnings in a company so he could save £1,000-a-week in tax. Ken paid 21% corporation tax rate on £319,478 of earnings by invoicing to Silveta Ltd, instead of paying the 50% top rate of income tax. He also owned 99% of a similar company twice prosecuted for non-payment of taxes. Ken’s effective tax rate in 2012 was 14.5%. Today he laughably calls Cameron “the most hypocritical prime minister of my lifetime”…
Skinner is far from a fool. If he had withdrawn the comment he wouldn't have had the same impact in the media, printed press and football messageboards. Job done - and no worry to him if he is suspended for a day.
As the most principled and honest MP in Parliament (attendance, expenses or however else you want to measure it) he is fireproof on these issues and it is his job to stick his boot into Cameron and his mates. He still sets the standard.
