Thinking of booking Dubai for 2 weeks in January.
anyone been here for a holiday?
is booze expensive in hotels?
I worked in Dubai on the new transport system some years back. I had a colleague with me who booked our hotel. He wanted to stay in Sharjah but we bailed after one day/night because of the constant calls to prayer from the minaret outside my window. He then arranged a hotel in central Dubai city. It was inhabited by Chinese females who attempted to shag (for $) anything that had a Y chromosome as soon as it came within 500 yards. In desperation I booked the 5 star across the road only to be confronted by a bevy of blond Russians with the same idea as their Chinese colleagues.
I get the same problem with women wherever I go but it's them trying to pay me.
Had lived there for five years, and still regularly visit due to work
Booze is relatively expensive and off sales in Dubai cannot be bought without a liquor permit and via specialist shops. Dubai has inward duty free ( ie you can buy on landing at the airport) and at times they have some good deals on one spirit or another. Similarly cases of beer are also sold
Most bars have an extended Happy Hour which will see you right for the early part of the evening. Night clubs will sting you. Speak to your hotel concierge and he will also be able to direct you to which bars has a cheap night on one or other day of the week
Friday Brunch is a big social event and there are places with an all in price including standard drinks.
A right of passage for most expats is a visit to the 'Hole in the Wall' in Ajman (Do a Google search.) You can literally buy (albeit off sales) drink from every continent. You can buy anything from the world's most expensive wines and spirts to cheap Indian whisky ( Piper) and rum ( Monk) and which will cost you no more than a few quid a bottle (both are blood rank by the way !!!)
