Fabio and Richards as wing-backs with James, Connolly and Peltier as a back three? The three in the middle rotating and Zohore and Gounongbe as two No 9s? Interesting!

I didn't get to see the game tonight cos I've been to football with my little lad, but it doesn't surprise me one bit that we seemed to improve considerably when Gunnarsson went off. He seems like a good lad but I hope he doesn't get anywhere near the first team this year.

    Match report from WOL

    Cardiff 1 - 1 Bochum

The Bluebirds trailed after a poor opening half but managed to find an equaliser early in the second period

The game started in a scrappy fashion as Cardiff struggled to assert themselves on the game and Bochum enjoyed the lion's share of possession.

The first warning sign that the Germans would pose a real threat came on the ten minute mark, as Cardiff failed to deal with a free-kick swung into to the box. Bochum had a free header but it was straight at David Marshall.

The Bluebirds' defenders looked to be waiting for an offside flag and they were relieved five minutes later when it was raised. This time, a Bochum free-kick was stabbed home before it was disallowed by the linesman.

Cardiff failed to learn the lesson and fifteen minutes later former Fulham defender Tim Hoogland leapt highest at the near post to convert a corner with a thumping header.

Bochum dominated the rest of the half and could have had another, as a cross into the box was headed just wide. David Marshall was well beaten. The Bluebirds' only chance of note in a disappointing first half was when Kenneth Zohore smashed the cross bar with a ferocious left footed effort.

They were given an immediate opportunity to make amends when Semi Ajayi released Frederic Gounongbe with a terrific ball over the top. The Benin striker was hauled down and Peter Whittingham emphatically converted.

The veteran midfielder almost made it two as Gounongbe was again fouled, this time on the edge of the area. The free-kick looked to be arching into the goalkeepers top corner but thudded off the upright.

Bochum came the closest to edging the contest as Quaschner fired just wide, and David Marshall had to be at his best to save a fierce effort moments later, but in the end the game fizzled out into a hard-fought and fair draw.

It was another subtle but clear tweak from kick-off today as Frederic Gounongbe and Kenneth Zohore both played as a conventional centre-forward partnership.

Joe Ralls was pushed up to be the highest player in the midfield three as Aron Gunnarsson and Peter Whittingham sat in behind. The Icelandic midfielder had a frustrating day but tried to make something happened and at least looked like there is no fitness hangover from his Euro exploits.

Fabio, meanwhile switched to the left-wing berth in the first half before playing the second half on the right. It shows just how many options Trollope has in his squad and there will be plenty of rotation this season.

Kenneth Zohore produced the best moment of the first half for the Bluebirds. In the left hand channel and with seemingly very few options, the Dane sprung away from his mark and rattled the cross bar with a stunning effort.

It was a moment of brilliance but elsewhere his positioning was average and he did not offer a lot for his team-mates.

Similarly, Gounongbe let much of this game pass him by but yet again made a definitive contribution in earning the penalty that brought the equaliser.

Both are showing raw talent but their all round contribution needs to improve.

Lee Peltier made his pre-season bow in the first half here and tucked in alongside Tom James and Matt Connolly as the right-sided centre-back. The Bluebirds' were short of ideas for the most part in that opening 45 but Peltier was excellent.

He does the basics well and was dominant in the air. Jazz Richards did his best to get forward and he was aided significantly by the fact that Peltier was always there to sweep up behind him.

It gives Paul Trollope yet another selection dilemma but Peltier looks perfect to play in a back three and while his distribution may not be the best, that is not so crucial in a team also featuring the likes of Peter Whittingham and Matt Connolly.

Cardiff had to do plenty of early defending and Peltier did it as well as anyone.

Jazz Richards had a decent first-half and looked typically willing to attack at any opportunity.

However, Declan John came on at half-time and while the youngster certainly benefited from his team's much more impressive attacking play, he again looked irrepressible going forward.

He could have had an early assist when Kenneth Zohore decided to chest an excellent cross rather than going for goal with his head.

There is plenty of time on the training ground and a game against Bournemouth for Richards to nail down a place but on what we have seen so far, if Trollope goes with wing-backs, Fabio and John are well placed to take the spots.

Reality check for Gunnarsson on Cardiff return.
The Iceland captain has been treated like a rock star on this tour, with 'huh' clap chants and requests for autographs following him wherever he has gone.

His much anticipated return to action was a bit of a reality check, as he was often left frustrated by his team-mates inability to read his passes and dummies.

The major positive is that he looked in great shape and did as much as anyone to make something happen in what was a poor first half for Cardiff.

He faces a real battle to nail down a spot in the starting XI but there is no doubt he is more than capable of doing so. Still no sign of that long throw, mind.

That's an interesting view on Gunners.
