The only thing that is under threat from the jessiah is the Labour Party.
So you dislike him for his success in noticing where to make a profit? If it is not him, its someone else. Lets not forget his franchise is one of the few where people are happy with the service. Not many can say that.
Weren't people not long ago calling for branson to take the lottery?
Well if we didn't have the subsidies could you try and imagine how bad it would be. Since privatisation number using rail have doubled, capacity has increased through upgrades. Subsidies help pay for these upgrades, 20 years of money being pumped into the rails and see how far we have come. Could you imagine the rails without all this investment?
Thankfully 2 decades of investment means in the coming years rail trVel will finally be able to pay for itself. It may be expensive and some trains still old but without the money the system would be crumbling. Too many decades of no investment in rail has caused this and there was a lot to sort out.
If the only reason it is improving/staying afloat is the public investment, why 'privatise' it in the first place? I just dont really see what these franchises bring to the table, but it is easy to see what they take.
When you run it and you use it. You can't blame yourself. When you pay someone for a service you expect them to keep to what they said. This works both ways. Franchises expect the government owned national rail to get their works done, and when the government have a deal with the franchises they have to get upgrades/improvement to services carried out.
When it's all governments fault for it going wrong there is no one to point a finger at for the blame. Having several parties all with obligations means things get done.
And it's taken this long to fix all the problems. Subsidies will be reduced and removed in the coming decade, as the networks finally become profitable as forecast.
