Thread: Bowen scores twice and City lose.

Bowen scores twice and City lose.

Unfortunately, the Bowen concerned was Jarrod Bowen of Hull City's Under 23 team and we've lost our 100% winning record.

Wharton and O'Sullivan only coming on as subs. I took your point last week about them being jacks of all trades and masters of none here but I was using them as an example to counter thehumblegringo's point that youngsters are being brought up to have a specific position. I don't agree with that. With so many tactical innovations now I think youngsters need to have a degree of flexibility, I think the club would be failing youngsters if they could only play one position in one system.

Maybe Jamie Bird would have been a better example to use. I haven't seen much of him but surely it's better that he's comfortable fitting into a number of systems rather than having a specific role for him? Similarly, I'd like to think that Tutonda and other full backs here learn how to play in a back five as well as a back four. If and when these guys become ready for the first team, or go out on loan, they'll need to fit in to whatever system is being played. Being a one-trick pony, like Noone, limits the options of both player and club.

Encouraging that that report from a Hull website makes out that we dominated despite losing

My point wasn't necessarily that youngsters can only play one position, it was more targeting the fact about how football has evolved particularly since the success of Barcelona and Spain.

Football positions have become more specialised in general.
Gone are the days where by and large midfielders moved up and down the field vertically in straight lines. If you watch kids football now, the role of a midfielder is unrecognisable form the days when I played and I am only 39!

Though in the past some midfielders were more defensive minded than others, the role of a CDM (as the kids call it) was somewhat unheard of in this country. Now everyone has a CDM.

This is what I am highlighting. I don't think this was prominent when Peter Whittingham came through the Academy system and Aron Gunnarsson came through in a nation which was in its football infancy and Joe Ralls came through non league.

Contrast that with kids like Patten who have been subjected to this style of coaching probably since they were about six years old and I believe they are more adaptable.

I know the Academy kids are expected to palynology everywhere (especially in their younger years) but my argument is that football itself has changed dramatically very quickly.

That's fair enough but, as I said to TOBW last week, if we haven't got the midfielders to adapt to 3-5-2 then why are we playing it? Also, most of the Wales players don't play 3-5-2 at club level but are able to adapt well for Wales so I don't see it as an insurmountable problem to try and teach old dogs some new tricks but I'd like to see signs of progress soon.
