Thread: Dimitrios Goutas

    Dimitrios Goutas

If, as expected, Dimitrios Goutas takes his usual place in the centre of City's defence at Rotherham tomorrow, it will mean the dependable Greek international has been ever-present in the Bluebirds starting line-up for all of this season's Championship matches. I haven't checked this, but I'm pretty sure he's also played every minute of every league game this season (I can't recall him being subbed at any stage).

So, here's a question for you: who was the last outfield City player to start all 46 games of a Championship season and in which campaign did that happen?

    Great question.

Neil Etheridge played all 38 league games in his Premier League season, and David Marshall got a full set in 2012-13 - but they are the only players starting every league game in the past 12 seasons, and as neither are outfield players we must be looking even further back. (I checked back on Wiki that far - though was sure about Etheridge)

    Don Cowie in 2011-12?

A keeper is not an outfield player...

Surprisingly, it was indeed the late, great Peter Whittingham - 46 starts and 12 goals. He also started both play-off games and 5 of the 8 League Cup ties.

Damn, I was thinking of the year later in the promotion season where Malky dropped him in the run-in.

He was rarely injured from recollection, Whitts. Besides his unbelievable talent he was also a great servant.

Still find it hard to comprehend he is no longer with us.

The 2011/12 side was pretty settled:

    46 starts - Whittingham
    45 starts - Marshall
    43 starts - Cowie
    42 starts - Taylor
    41 starts - Gunnarsson
    41 starts - McNaughton
    41 starts - Miller

This season only Goutas has passed the 40 mark.

I reckon Whitts was the best player outside the Premier League that season.

I dare say it's easier to have a settled side if they're winning regularly.

I sometimes wonder if Bulut's chopping and changing hasn't helped with our form?

Didn't Steven caulker play every minute of the Premier league season?

You are right - I missed him when I was skimming through Cardiff squads on Wiki.

I’m pretty sure he was subbed in one game and Panzo came on. I don’t have any guesses tho.
