Wales under-21s won 3-1 in Liechtenstein. Coxe and Abbruzzese played the 90 minutes, Mark Harris came on as a second half sub (as did Rabbi Matondo).

Thanks for that. I see the two home matches next month are being played in Bangor - fair enough, when Cardiff gets all of the senior team games, but I hope at least one of the home fixtures in this group is played somewhere in this area.

Looks like Guardiola is not a fan of the U23 league in producing good footballers - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41471883

isaak Davies got a hat trick in the Under 18s 6-2 win over QPR a fortnight and now Sion Spence has scored one as they win 3-0 at Ipswich yesterday.

Alan Lee in charge of the Ipswich team. Hopefully he can pass on some of his ball mastery to the next generation.

I'm sure you've mentioned this before but I'm surprised Spence hasn't featured more for the under-23s this season. They seem to have identified a core of seven or eight who feature in most games at that level but Spence hasn't quite made the cut, maybe he will now. No rush, of course, but I expected him to be a regular this time round.

Quickly on Alan Lee I remember asking him if he meant that cross which went in against Derby as a shot. He told me to 'feck off'

We gave him some stick here mind. I was expecting him to tell all of us that when he left but I remember him being incredibly generous, thanking us for our support and saying how much he'd enjoyed his time here. Ever since then I've held him in high regard, despite the fact I watched him play.

I said it to him jokingly. I didn't really know what to say as an Ice Breaker. Like 'I see you're knee is fecked there Al' Looking back I don't blame him for being a bit grumpy, big move, plays football to earn a living, not doing so good. I never took no offence.

Sam Bowen's free kick was superb in the QPR game. Surely he'll win club goal of the month with that one.

I do like the idea of him being tutored by Bellamy in the younger age category. He seems to be operating quite high up the pitch at the mo, drifting into the channels etc. I can imagine him getting a lot from CB. But if he's finding that level easy, he probably needs to be challenged. He seems to have filled out a bit over the past year which is good.

I think I've brought up the matter of how Sion Spence has gone from intended first team substitute to not good enough for the Development team twice on my blog this season (I've definitely made mention of it). It's strange how he has gone from being a regular member of the Development squad at the back end of last season to an occasional member of it to me and, on the face of it, there seems to be an admission that City got it wrong a few months back when he was considered to be up to playing against people years older than him in the Under 23s and would have been a sub at Huddersfield if it had not been for a problem with red tape.

When Spence was featuring for the Under 23s last season, he was still being selected for the Under 18s, so he was often playing on Saturdays and Mondays. Therefore, it may be that City have decided that they want to limit him to one game a week even though most 16/17 year olds on the books of a pro club want to do is play as much and as often as they can at that age - he seems quite an athlete as well.

    http://www.thepowerof10.info/athlete...hleteid=528196

Anyway, if that is the reason for his non selection in what is effectively our reserve team, then I think it's a poor decision, because he's shown he can do well with the Under 23s and he should be with them if it really has to be one out of the two teams only.

My son's (excellent) coach threw me a few years ago when he questioned moving youngsters into higher age groups. He wasn't against it, of course, but he said it wasn't a simple issue. He said there were a number of benefits in keeping talented youngsters involved in their own age group; it gave them a responsibility they wouldn't have at a higher level, taught them leadership skills and, obviously, it's also a huge plus for the other youngsters in that age group to be playing with better players.

I'm not saying any of that is relevant to the Sion Spence situation but it just shows (as if we didn't already know from all the discussions we've had on here about it) that there are many different views on how, and how quickly, to bring talented youngsters through. It's an interesting and complex issue.

Fair points, but it doesn't really address the one that stands out here - why is a kid who was considered good enough to feature regularly in the Development team at the back end of last season and must have done well enough at that level to be considered ready to be a part of the first team squad for a game against a side that went up, now consigned, almost exclusively, to the youth team?

Since I wrote my previous message on Sion Spence, I received some information which may answer the question I posed above, but, as it was confidential in nature, I can't pass it on here I'm sorry. What I can say though is that it wasn't just Rabbi Matondo who Man City were interested in a year or two back, there was another City youngster they tried to sign, who opted to stay with us after being told that he would be given the sort of chance to prove himself ready for the first team at a younger age than the club have been in the habit of doing with others in recent years. Now, I wonder if playing for the youth team week in, week out, a few months after you were deemed to be ready for the first team fits that criteria? To this observer, there seems a danger that a different decision will be made next time contract discussions are due and if that happens, then the club will have, once again, demonstrated their inability to develop gifted youngsters in a manner which benefits it in terms of producing their own first team players.

I'm assuming the club have signed Ogo Obi then as he wasn't listed as a trialist against Rovers. There are two other names I don't recognise - Calver and Parish also listed for us in that game. Anyone know anything about them?

Here's some hype on Ogo Obi from three years ago...

Obi and Parish are both starting for the U23's today against Millwall. As are Camp. Paterson and Connolly. No sign of Bogle can only assume he is injured as he wasn't on the bench Friday either.

Bogle is over 23 and I think the ruling is that we can only field three oldies in the DVP team.

Hopefully good news that Paterson is ready for the seniors then. Warnock and the assistants looks mighty peeved with a couple of things Peltier did at the end of the Brum game so we could be about to see him.

Hopefully TOBW at the game and we get some details on the newbies. Hint. Hint.

My commitment to the Under 23 and Under 18 teams doesn't stretch to me going to watch their away games - City are playing in Sarf London this afternoon.

0-0 after the first quarter - Millwall enjoying the majority of possession and have hit the bar.

0-0 at half time, but, reading the Twitter feed, it looks like Millwall are well on top.

Finished 4-0 - according to the stats on the site you provided a link to, Wales had no goal attempts, on or off target, and no corners.

If deemed good enough, he should be playing for DVP. Maybe they've seen things in training that have changed that view. Who knows?
Not necessarily and not really in this case. Read Loramski's posts above. It's quite possible he's being held back for perfectly good reasons. Bellamy is managing him for the 18s which could be the perfect mentor for him given the positions he's taking up on the pitch. He's obviously good enough for the DVP.

My hunch is they are trying to nurture that unusually talented younger crop together.

It was very strange indeed. Maybe it was just a simple cock up with insurance? You'd know more than me I'm sure.

Hopefully the player will benefit long term by having the carrot dangled. It's a young age to be chucked into the limelight. That said, it is good to raise the profile of our youngsters so that they attract loan clubs when they're ready.

Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...

I'm not sure that's necessarily effective though - could well be holding up someone's progression towards the first team in the hope of producing a crop akin to the group Fergie had success from - and then nothing for years.

It's amazing if you can get a group of 5-6 coming through who can make the first team in one intake but it's a bloody rarity. We don't do that kind of luck.
