What's your problem with Showaddywaddy by the way? Still going strong, form is temporary but class is permanent. Apparently The Redskins have been made an offer to reform, them headlining with Showaddywaddy as support would be awesome.

Re Showaddywaddy. When I look at what life looks like being as adults for kids today, it confirms my belief that I'm happy to have been born when I was, as opposed to now. However, I don't think I was dealt the best hand when it comes to music. For me the ages of 15 to 20 should be the years when your musical tastes really develop as you get into it with more knowledge and understanding, while also having the finances to really start adding to your collection, but what did I have during those years? Pompous and tedious prog rock (sorry Enoch!) and twee glam rock.
Having watched a documentary on it a year or so ago, I really should have paid more attention to Northern Soul, but we were all into (or pretending to be!) Yes, ELP, King Crimson and Camel in Fairwater back then and I thought the cashing in singles that got to about number thirty eight in the charts back then (e.g. Skiing in the Snow by the truly awful Wigan's Ovation) were representative of what the genre had to offer.
When Showaddywaddy came on Top of the Pops, that was the signal for me to go and make a cup of tea, have a pee, answer the phone call I convinced myself I'd heard etc. etc. - anything to avoid listening to something from a group I rated very slightly above the loathed Bay City Rollers!'
Very true. It seems odd to call Punk a breath of fresh air but it was definitely something that music needed at the time. To compare it with City, last Friday night was like watching The Clash having had to put up with years of watching Yes & Showaddywaddy.
Going back to them, I see Showaddywaddy did an arena tour with The Bay City Rollers, The Osmonds and David Essex a couple of years ago. That would have been an awkward moment if someone had bought you a ticket as a Xmas present.
Showaddywaddys first single after winning New Faces, 'Hey Rock N' Roll, wasn't too bad. Thereafter they did absolutely crap cover versions of some of the great 1950s rock n' roll songs. Murdered every single one of them! They were a kind of extremely poor mans UK version of the USA's Sha Na Na, who at least, prior to grease fame, where a damn fine rock n' roll rival band.
I'm pretty sure they (Showaddywaddy), played the Globe in April, just gone. Doubt if there were any original members left though?
Good to see you are fan of Northern Soul these days, Bob. One of the best bands in the UK covering 'Northern Soul' classics, The All Nighters, are playing The Globe on Saturday 14th January. Bring some talc and get your dancin' shoes on! The promoter has pushed the boat out and got an old Wigan Casino DJ to spin some rare 45's on the night
