    You Want It Darker

The excellent new album from Leonard Cohen.

Well worth a listen if you like this sort of thing.

I saw the velvet gentleman way back (1980's?) at the Hippodrome in Bristol and three times (Cardiff, London 02 twice) on his recent world tour. Magnificent in the extreme. The are some very good articles on him in The New Yorker, online.

Well worth a listen if you're thinking of killing yourself any time soon.

I like it a lot. Leonard is at his best when he's broody and apocalyptic as this is. Stripped back and simple too, as always.

That is certainly not the case at all. The album is very uplifting if you listen carefully to the lyrics.

He does take some getting used to, for years I hated my dad playing his stuff but as I've got older my taste has changed and he's grown on me.

Your father was obviously very cultured and a man of good taste.

Saw him by accident at Glastonbury 2008 (I think it was?)
I say by accident because he was on between two acts I wanted to see and with it being the Sunday I couldn't move! I remember looking down at my timetable to see how long his set was and commenting to my mate something along the lines of "3 f***ing hours?"

By the end of them 3 hours I could easily have done another 3, a glorious sunset behind the pyramid as he sang Hallelujah, grown men all around sobbing like babies

To this day one of my finest Glastonbury performances. A living legend

I'd seen that video before and the article where it was voted number 1 Glastonbury performance ever which I wouldn't argue with but it doesn't get more objective than that!

Unfortunately that's the best footage out there as he refused the BBC permission to film it. Not sure why but think it was connected with his financial problems?

Hucking fell, you adore singers who can't sing and who knock out dreary rubbish.

Neil Young was bad enough. Nick Drake was worse. But Leonard Cohen is beyond the pale! I defy anyone who's objective to describe Cohen as anything other than a shite vocalist. Feck me, practically anyone singing in their bath would sound better than him.

You have spotted that my preference is for singer/songwriters rather than singers.

I actually think that the likes of Drake, Young, Dylan and Cohen also have excellent vocals that suit their songs.

But, heh, live and let live.

    Eh?
