The fake epidemic of fake news

This has to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen, the BBC advising people on how to avoid 'fake news'
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/38053324

Some of the biggest peddlers of ‘fake news’ and ‘post-truth politics’ out there are saying the same things, here are just a few..

CNN recommended a "triple check before you share" rule, maybe they should take their own advice?

Angela Merkel warns against internet trolls and 'fake news' that threaten democracy

Fake News May Not Be Protected Speech
    https://www.bloomberg.com/view/artic...otected-speech

Don't be fooled by this sudden concern for truth, this is a fake epidemic of fake news, this is an attack on alternative media, google and facebook are already banning 'fake news' web sites from their advertising networks and there are calls for more to be done, you don't have to be a Philadelphia lawyer to work out where this is going..

I suppose you pick and choose where you get your information.

What sites do you two use?.

    Al Monitor is good.

Bloomberg is good for reporting on things. But not for opinion. They release a ridiculous amount.

I'e subscribed to: http://foreignpolicy.com/ Is that ok or is it totally American leaning?.

Most of the BBC stuff is far better than you'll find on unpaid media.

I picked those randomly out of the 'fake news' search results, my point is they are all saying the same things, I just selected a few that's all, I've never heard of Al Monitor and I don't use foreignpolicy either.

You must have seen some of my previous posts about the bbc?

So, what DO you use? It's all well and good telling people to avoid certain sites, but you should really provide alternatives.

Why are you asking if others think a website is "reputable" or not? If they say it is, you would then need to ask if the people who recommended it are reputable or not!

The OP has the opinion that Main Stream Media is bad, and the media she reads is good and trustworthy. Nothing wrong with that at all.

However, where the OP is conflicted is where she preaches on telling people that Main Stream Media (BBC/CNN) are fake news peddlers. She is contradicting herself by doing the exact same thing that Main Stream Media (like Facebook/Twitter) are now doing... telling people what to believe and what not to believe.

My rule. Read news items from as many different sources as possible. Look at the evidence, consider the gaps in evidence and form your own opinion.

It would be absolutely crazy to believe your favourite site (whether that is BBC or a "non-mainstream" source) is telling the truth all the time. Some of the preachers here are unwittingly falling into that exact trap.

That is what I do, I'm not telling anyone what to believe, I'm just saying what I believe, I don't care if people agree or not.

Re: The fake epidemic of fake news

Twitter have also jumped on the "fake news" bandwagon, so it was quite bizzare that when a user discovered a massive 5,000+ child porn ring openly sharing videos and photos, Twitter decided to suspend the person because they reported it!

So far the non-fake news MSM have failed to mention it

I posted a factual statement regarding a huge CP ring that was discovered on Twitter, and the only action they took was to ban the person who had made the discovery and reported it. Also the MSM failed to make any mention of this discovery (or the recently exposed Norwegian CP ring).

Meanwhile Twitter had entered into the war on "fake" news by banning people and tweets that conflicted with their own views, i.e. a liberal agenda.

My post was then met with an ad hominem attack upon myself, which I consider to be an attempt to cast doubt on the original message.

Actually you don't have to do anything, the info is all over the internet. I guess that's what this fake news thing is all about.

Does the fact that some white helmets make some stories up mean all aid workers are not credible.

Like the fact some migrants were playing up to the cameras. Does that mean all migrants are now liars on a smash and grab job?. No.

I certainly don't think like that, every case should be looked at individually.

I like the idea of there being a relatively honest and believable Mainstream news.
In that respect I like Channel 4 news more than other mainstreams.

Other than that its pick'n'mix and take your chances.

I'm with you - a range of news sources provides a more 3D view of the world. And Channel 4 news is deffo better than the Beeb. The recent Cathy Newman v Milo Yiannopoulos dust up was great.
