O/T Backing up to an external drive

One for the techies on here please. I want to back up data from my PC - photos, documents, etc. I don't want to pay for online storage (and there's too much for free online storage) so I was thinking of getting an external hard drive. If I do, what should I look for and can I get software which an automatically back up selected folders?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Mega upload gives you 50gb for free. Just use that. Download the programme and it will back it all up for you.

Alternative is use several free cloud storages, before finding mega I had 9gb on Dropbox 15gb on Microsoft and 10gb on Google. Now all photos are on mega and my work files are on Dropbox.

And if you have the programme on 2 computers it will automatically keep them all updated, so file amendments will be available several seconds later on your other devices.

Otherwise just buy and external hard drive and manually copy over files.
