Thread: Filibustering

    Filibustering

Does this practice have any place in a modern democracy?
Why should an individual mp be able to block all debate on an issue he takes a dislike to without allowing anyone else to even hear the arguments.

As I type this serial filibusterer tory mp Phillip Davis has been droning on for an hour about nothing to try to stop a domestic violence bill from being debated.

Can you imagine if businesses were operated in this manner? We should expect better from our MPs.

South Korean opposition lawmakers have set what appears to be a new world record for a combined filibuster after speaking for 192 hours.
Nearly nine days of non-stop speeches included rambling monologues and long chunks of George Orwell's novel 1984.

Should be illegal, and prosecutable. Minimum jail for 1 year.

Absolute waste of space, oxygen time and money.

It does not show our democracy in the best light at all. You can't tell me that you can increase youth engagement by showing them a video of someone talking over others until no action can be taken.

It can be used for positive reasons however, although I'd suggest the majority of the time is that people have been persuaded to act that way by their favourite backer.

    But was it conducted vigilantly?

I would imagine the whips have a list of "droners" at their disposal, and they probably undergo special training.

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that Philip Davies is at it again.

This time he has chosen to deny parliament the opportunity to debate on honour killings.
