It's a debate, but I am surprised that after all this time, I have never heard a better pure pop song. In fact, they have been regurgitating the ABBA pop formula ever since.

ABBA were superb imho, coming just as Punk was in its ascendency, it wasn't "cool" to like them at the time, but they have withstood the test of time and their songs are technically very good, with complex harmonies, vocal and chords.

I like SOS, but for me, Dancing Queen and Winner are better songs.

People like Max Martin have dissected the ABBA sound and it is still prevalent until this day.

As you are nominating the song for the highest bauble I think that I am justified in pointing out that the lyrics are a bit weak here and there e.g.

    "Whatever happened to our love?
    I wish I understood
It used to be so nice
It used to be so good".

It's that word "nice" that makes me cringe. Particularly when followed by "good" as an alternative.

My Swedish is magnificent, of course....

And now they sing about dildos, so what is the point you are trying to make?

I am a person with exquisite taste, and as weird as it may seem, I don't think this song has ever been beaten as a pop masterpiece.
I've always been an Abba fan, their greatest hits vol 1 was my first ever album and I played it to death, it definitely shaped my music taste and what I look for in a tune.

I can be put right off of a tune I really like because of cheesy lyrics, I've deleted loads of mixes I've recorded because of it, not sure why it bothers me so much.

What would you replace nice with?

    "Whatever happened to our love?
    I wish I understood
It used to be so ????
It used to be so good".

Sex Pistols Sid Vicious loved Abba he once saw them arriving at an airport and ran to meet them only for Abba to get freaked out and had their security to stop him

    Wise move on ABBA's part.

Look what happened to Nancy Spungen. Better safe than sorry.

And oddly enough, allegedly the chorus for the 'Pistol's Pretty Vacant was nabbed from the chorus of SOS. I think I recall reading John Lydon said as much.

While they don't sound especially similar, they do share the same melody.

If you like reading there's a book called Sids Way which i thought was an excellent read.. That's where i took the Abba story from.

I came across an interview with Benny. He said it took them 5 years of trial and error to work out their songwriting formula. They used to write in the studio everyday from 9 to 5, and even with said formula in place he said they would be happy to get 10 good songs a year.

From Glen Matlocks autobiography he stated he lifted the melody from SOS for Pretty Vacant.

Just read that Dave Grohl says he was influenced by ABBA
