Has anyone sacked off their virgin super hub or bt hub for an apple or Tenda router?
Just wondering if they are much better for smart Tv viewing etc? My virgin hub struggles sometimes and a Tv downstairs always struggles even though as the crow flies it can only be 10 ft through the floor to the hub upstairs.
All good for general browsing, can't be arsed hard wiring a smart Tv when really the signal should be good enough.

That's a wifi 'signal' booster too.
They work great for boosting a wifi 'coverage' in the house, where previously there was none, or it was very weak.
They can provide a stronger 'signal', but the amount of data that can be passed down that wifi connection has been halved.
That is just the way a wifi booster works.
Example:
Say I have bought a wifi booster to enable me to read CCMB in bed on my tablet - it will work absolutely great for that.
But the wifi booster has a two-way conversation with my tablet, and at the same time it has to have a second round trip conversation with the router downstairs.
Thus, by design you get half the bandwidth , i.e. half the amount of data you can 'get' from the router downstairs (per second).
Still great for reading CCMB in bed because you have a strong signal. And that is all you need for that purpose.
But Goats wants to stream on a smart TV or smart box upstairs.
A Wifi Booster alone may not help there due to this bandwidth halving..
It might just work well enough - but it might well buffer, drop out and cause frustration.
For similar money, a better solution for watching streaming films, Net TV 'upstairs' etc are PowerLine adaptors or PowerLine adapter with Wifi repeater, as they maintain most or all of your bandwidth / throughput.
Much better for streaming.

Cheers for that I might go to maplins and enquire about the power line adaptors. It's just one Tv in a converted garage downstairs where the signal drops or sometimes can't pick up the wi fi at all, which is odd as it's only 10 ft through the floor/walls from the modem upstairs. Was starting to wonder if it could be the tv but it's brand new all singing and dancing one and the older Samsung ones pick it up ok despite being slightly further away....
I hardly ever watch normal Tv, can't handle it as it's mostly shit. This is mainly to get amazon prime on one particular TV, which the kids watch so I get some peace, and I dint get much with a 3 and 5 yr oldApologies but you didnt say that originally. Just grabbed one of these off ebay for £50, I've been using the plug in TP-Link adapters to get the signal around the house so hopefully that new router will cover the house properly and I can sell these adapters to pay for it.
Great router for the money mate, Have a look at putting merlin firmware on there.

just upload the .trx file to: Advance settings-Administration-firmware upgrade on the router.
Just to add Asus pay Merlin for his work so he really knows what he is doing and was a major contributor at dd-wrt for years.

Funnily enough, I did just that last week with openvpn using Nordvpn. I only get 10MB download though when my connection is 20MB (with Sky now, no Virgin where I moved to :( YMMV)
Looking into it, it's the CPU on the router that is the prob, It's only 600Mhz and struggles. Newer Asus routers would be better, 1000Mhz dual core but your looking at £150 at the mo.
Nice one. Not sure I want to cut my speeds as much as that but this Snoopers Charter is such bullshit that I might give it a go and see how it goes.
I moved my router to the middle of the house. Can get over 100mbps everywhere. Virgin media hub.
That's what I use. I've got an old house with stone walls. I fitted several of these around and the "wifi" signal is great now. Easy to install.
